Default 5 Speed or 6 Speed . . . Pros / Cons for Beginner

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for your help with this . . . I am going to be buying a new 03 Tib next month and I need to make a decision on which gear box to go with.
Right now I am learning to drive manual, and I'd like to really know the big difference between a 6 speed and a 5 speed.

Is either one more powerful or easier to learn . . . ? I was told if I am not planning on racing the 5 speed manual would be more than enough and still provide sufficient performance over an auto and that on the highway the 6 speed would be more appropriate. ANY information or comparison on the 2 would be most helpful. Thanks !

I don't own a Tibby, but I drive my girlfriends a lot and in my opinion the worst mistake Hyundai made was to put a 5-speed with the lower gearing in the Tib. The 6-speed would have been a much better choice since the 5-speed causes the car to run way to high at highway speeds, but they needed to since that was the only way to get the power out of the car. I am looking forward to her trading in her 00 for the 03. I think the 6-speed and the 6cyl will make the car a lot better.

As far as learning. There is no difference. A stick is a stick.

I'm also learning to drive stick cause my next car will be a stick. I'm leaning towards the 6 speed cause you get a quicker car. There is really no difference between the two expect you have to shift sooner with the 6 speed and you have that extra gear in the long run. Plus chances are you won't be in the higher gears a lot, but its nice to know they are there. If I were you I would get the 6 speed. Reason 1. Is that it makes the car all some much better. 2 You are going to see a lot more cars now being made with 6 speeds, like the Spec V, Rsx, Matrix, and the WRX sri. 3. Why not? 5 or 6 seems cooler to say 6 speed. The final reason is that fully loaded and under $20 go for it all man.

If you've never driven a car with a manual transmission before I recommend you do not do it with a new car. Find a friend or family member with an older car and practice on that. The main difference will be between the types of clutches (cable release and hydrolic, both have different feel and release points) and with any transmission, different shift gates and gear possitions.

But make sure you practice first on something that isn't brand spanking new, and have someone with experience there with you to give you advice. Once you get to where you're not stalling so much and that you can negotiate hills with relative ease, then you should go and test drive a Tib with a manual (personally, I liked the 6spd that I drove, very nice).

Oh, btw, for highway driving, a 6th gear can be desireable, esp if you're going fast enough to where you start getting into the high 3k to mid 4k rpms in 5th gear, which is where the 6th gear comes in handy and brings the engine back down somewhere in the mid to high 2k to mid 3k rpm (only drove the 03 Tib once and don't remember the gear ratios, but it was similar to this in my old truck).

Get the V6 with a 6spd and have some fun

correct me if im wrong, but I saw a little thing on the gearing for the 5 and 6 speed tiburons. To me it looked like the 6 speed had slower gears than the 5 speed. The only gear i really remember though is first gear. 3.1:1 ont he 6 speed and 3.4:1 on the 5 speed. not a lot quicker but it still is. Of course i may be wrong. If anyone has more info onthe gearing of the new tibs id love to hear cause im very curious myself.

i would get the 6 speed... the extra gear is going to save you alittle gas, that and the 6 speed tranny is sourced from a company outside Hyundai, so im guessing it will be more reliable...

some people havent had any tranny problems, some people HAVE had problems... regardless, hyundai will have to replace it anyway, but if it one tranny is stronger than the other, id save yourself the slight potential for problems

now dont get discouraged, hyundais newer trannys are much better, but i got fucked over at 30k with my auto, and i dont do neutral drops.......my car is also 3 years old and hyundai has moved up one generation since then

this is something that i can't figure out... hyundai's site says that with the six speed you get 18mpg city and 26mpg highway... but with a five speed you get 19mpg city and 26mpg highway... is there something wrong with their numbers or do six speed's just add performance at higher speeds? and it says the 4spd gets better gas mileage 20city

I would say there is no real significant difference at all. Obviously there is another gear, but what is the ratio on 6th versus the ratio of 5th on the 5 speed? On the 5 speed, fourth is geared at 1:1, with 5th acting as an overdrive. On the 6 speed, 5th is your 1:1 (or very close to, maybe .98:1), and 6th is your OD. The 6 speed is merely a closer ratio gear set in order to add that sixth gear. The gas mileage explains it just the same.

If you want to brag ... take the 6-er ... otherwise, save the cash.
----------------------------------------------
Added ... Checked the gearing table on the 6 speed. I wouldn't have expected Hyundai to drop that low on the 6th ratio .... nice.

http://community.webshots.com/photo/28735231/29121667NqsjrKShGz. Check the ratios and rec shift pts for the 5 and 6 spd trannies. Thanx to Concept for pic's. I also read that the top speed is limited to 132MPH on both trannies as delivered from the factory.

the point of the 6spd is to give better gearing for road course type affairs. It gives the car a better chance to be in its powerband in any given situation.

In other words, 6spd OwNz jOo.
