Default 03 Tiburon is a nice car!

Hey i am 02 Impreza WRX owner and one of my friends just bought a new Tiburon V6. The cars looks great especially with the all the options. Also the transmission seems to shift really smooth. Too bad there's no AWD and a turbo. Anyways, I just have a few questions.

How reliable are the trannies (six speed)? Especially after MODs.

Where can you find performance parts?

How good is the stock exhaust system?

What are the cheapest most effective MODs?

Thanks for the info. He should be signing up on the boards soon.

Welcome! Let me try to help with my limited knowledge.

1) Not sure about the tranny. Still fairly new, I do think some people have had problesm. May just be certain cars?

2) Not much in they way of performance parts as of yet, but on the way. Sites to check:
http://www.hyundaiperformance.com/
http://www.kore-motorsports.com/
http://www.sharkracing.com/
http://www.hdkautosport.com/
http://www.speedstate.com/
http://www.hve.com.au/
http://www.mhptuning.com/

3) From what I have read the stuck exhaust is very restrictive. I upgraded exhaust would be a good idea.

4) An intake and exhaust would be a great start, it's said to be good for 20+ HP. Others will be able to tell you more.

Good luck!

rgsuby,

the six speed is japanese, aichi is the maker of the tranny. The car is too new here to have personal accounts of problems. This is my second Hyundai though and I now have close to 1500 miles on my 03 six speed. No problems at all so far and not expecting any. Apparently the v6 is not a mega mod beast due to possibly weak crank and main bearings. In Korea k&n has an intake out that apparently dynos 12-15hp gain. The stock exhaust is said to be heavily restrictive. I have seen and heard the Keymotorsports 03 tiburon up close (from the grand-am cup series) they say they are getting 230hp from intake, race exhaust and ecu chip. It sounds bad ass. Apparently according to the resident guru from Korea who posts here the v6 is reliable to 250hp after which things become questionable. Anything over 200hp will be good enough for me and should be relatively easy to reach which is why I went with the v6, not as much money in mods necessary to reach what will be plenty of hp for me. Only problem I have heard so far is that one member blew his clutch at 1250 miles, but though he claims he was not abusive during the break in, he has not posted anything at all stating what the dealerships opinion on the cause of the blowout was which makes me think he beat the hell out of it and just ain't fessin' up! Congrats to your friend on his purchase, it's a sweet ass car.

Let's realize everyone that 230 or 250 hp is not to the wheels.

oneandonly,

Who said that it was? No car is sold or marketed with the hp to the wheels, they market the biggest number they can which is at the crank. The wrx is not 227 at the wheels either.

Yeah, you're right JustinL. Just erks my nerves when everyone talks about getting 20 hp from an exhaust or intake. Uh uh. Ain't happening. 20 hp to the crank is more or less 5 hp to the wheels and I'm just guessin. Oh well. To each his own.

actually....there is a chip that gives about 30 whp...not for a hyundai though! hahha! i think its for a saab or an audi...anyways, it ups the boost of the turbo in addition to whatever else the hell it does, so thatz where the hp comes from. so dont say a chip and ehxhaust doesnt give 20 hp because obviously it can!!!!

Jeez my bad JeteDAWG, I didn't know this was an "Audi or SAAB" forum. What was I thinking when I said that. Will that chip do that for a Tiburon, nope didn't think so.

he was just stating that you can get 20+ whp from simple mods and when they decide to get a chip goin for the hyundai's you can expect that too
