Holy fuck, I had the same problem and my car has 84000 miles.
It could be your coolant temperature sensor(thats what it was for me).
You could also have a leak in the hose that goes from the intake to the idle air control valve. Do you get a CEL?

yeah i'd check both the IAC and the MAF to see that thier working properly...i know some people have installed CAI and had problems with thier cars acting weird...usually throws a CEL but if you have a buddy that owns a shop or something or want to pay the $40 or so to put it on a scanner that would also tell you your problem. Either way get back to us and let us know what the problem was.

yes it does have a CEL now. also i dunno if its normal but my cars RPM is about 3500 at 75mph in 5th gear.... is that really high?
im taking it to a mechanic tomorrow to find out whats wrong and hopefully it wont cost too much. also the car seems to be kind of slow. i need to shift at like 3000-3500 if i want to accellerate as fast as a mini van from a light. i dunno if this is normal either. thanks for the help, i will let u know what happens. i think it has a borla exhaust on it too if that matters... its got a big ass tip which i dont like. ill have to get a new tip for it.

3500 rpm at 75 mph is fine. Its the same as my tibby, a dsm or an evo with a 6 speed. Some cars get better gas mileage at higher rpms where the engine is more efficient. Keeping it around 3000 rpms is ok. If you have 3inch exhaust from the header back then your going to have a problem with drivability as the low end torque is developed into mid to high range horse power because of the new flow characteristics of the engine. So if your car wants to go 4k then take it there. I started getting better gas mileage than stock but I have a 63 mm TB and I/H/E. I even have a High flow fuel pump.

Good luck.

holy shit. cause my moms escape does 80 at 2600 RPM, so i was just wondering if it was normal. my car is so loud right now i feel like if i take it past 3000 it sounds like im racing the car next to me. i took it to the mechanic and he thinks there is somethign wrong with the intake manifold. hes going to fix it thurs or friday. so when should i be shifting with my tiburon? i feel like if i go past 2500 i am wasting gas... is this untrue?. the car has a borla exhaust with a huge fucking rice cannon tip. can i just cut the tip off? is it needed? one more thing. is it possible to no gas launch in these cars?

You can rev it higher than 2800 and not waste a ton of gas. Its a 2.0 4cyl not a 5.4 v8

You can cut it off but the tip does little to make the noise. Its the muffler or lack of one.

I can get my elantra (same engine for the most part) going w/o gas

so should i be driving around in higher RPMS for better gas milage? cause i shift at 2000 half the time and usually cruise at around 1500-2000. it seems to be a high reving engine with a 6500 redline so im not really used to it.

Daily driving you can shift it wherever...but if your shifting at too low of an rpm its hard on the transmission..if it seems like its lugging in a certain gear its because you shifted too soon...is this your first standard? I can just tell where a vehicle likes to shift by listening to it and feeling the power...let the motor rev up as high as you like and shift the gear..the higher the rpms you shift at the more it will like the next gear..for racing I launch my car at 3500 rpm i have sticky tires also..i wait for the tires to stop spinning and when the car hits about 6,800 i shift it...STOCK the cut out is at 6500 rpm...wheras mine is alittle diffrent befause of the ecu upgrade the rev is at 6,900-7,000. Just drive the car around and get the feel for it..if it doesn't excellerate the way youw ant its because your shifting too soon..the tibs power really doesn't kick in until 3500 rpms and then the rpms will turn up quick from there
