hey, i have a 97 tiburon with the 1.8L manual 5 speed. The head on this motor is bad. I have a 99 Tiburon with the 2.0L with an automatic that i want to swap into the 97. The ECUs on the cars are completely different looking, and the plugs look different. my goal is to swap the 2.0L from the 99 into the 97. The harnesses look to be the same, but what do I do with the ECUs? Can i just leave all the 1.8L harness/ecu hooked up to the 2.0L, and will that work with the manual? or would a head swap be possible. ANY help would be greatly appreciated, kind of lost.
I know on most cars a head swap is possible, ex. BMW 325is 2.5L/325es 2.7L. If I was to guess, I'd say besides the ECU, the heads are the only difference between the 1.8 and the 2.0. If the heads have the same bolt pattern and the ECU plugs right in, I would give it a shot. Or if you want a more confident opinion, call a hyundai tech or go to the hyundai parts department and ask them everything you need to know, they'll most likely get a tech for you to talk to.
the head is the same as the 2.0. The ecu from the 1.8 is usually considered an upgrade to the 2.0 and should plug in just fine.
The only real differance between the 1.8 and 2.0 mechanically is the
the rods are longer on the 2.0
and pistons are little bit taller on the 1.8
stroke is longer on the 2.0
and they both have different intake camshafts
flywheel pilot holes are different sizes and somthing else on the crank shaft.... hmmm cant remember.
Thank you so much for the help!!! on a side note, pending that everything works out, do i need to do anything else to the engine to allow for a turbo or supercharger? route should be taken?
Depends how far you want to take your atmospheric augmentation project.
I am not going to throw out numbers and tell you this is what you will need to get this far... to many variable
Generally for safety and longevity sakes before adding an intake compressor is to beef up the main rotating assembly and create a stronger bond between Mr. Block and Miss Head. This goes for N/A as well.
This is not always needed but I like to think of it as cheap insurance.
