Check engine light

Hi,

I have a 2001 Sante Fe and the check engine light is on. It seems to be running fine. We just switched out the battery and the light went off but came back on the next day. I have made sure the gas cap is on tightly, so that is not the problem.


There is also a rattling noise under the engine. Everytime you go up a hill it rattles. It has been doing this since we bought new in 2001. They say that it will do that, because there are so many metal parts?

have the check engine light scanned at autozone for free and post the codes

Here is what I got from Autozone. Code P0171 which could be 4 things.

It determined that the fuel system for bank 1 was too lean.

1. It could be the MAS.
2. Oxygen sensor is defective
3. Ignition misfire-repair
4. Fuel injector problem

I bought some fuel injector cleaner and hopefully that will work or I will have to replace the MAS? Any other ideas?

Try new plugs and wire. Cheapest parts first, then try replacing the MAF.

Air Leakage Inspection
1.	
Visually/physically inspect the air leakage in intake/exhaust system as following items,
If OK, go to next step.
If NG, repair as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.
A.	
Vacuum hoses for splits, kinks and improper connections.
B.	
Throttle body gasket
C.	
Gasket between intake manifold and cylinder head
D.	
Seals between intake manifold and fuel injectors
E.	
Exhaust system between HO2S and Three way catalyst for air leakage
2.	
Check for air leakage in EVAP. Purge control valve.
(1)	
Remove the manifold side vacuum hose from the EVAP canister purge valve.
(2)	
Using a hand vacuum pump apply specified vacuum(Approx. 15 in, Hg) to the manifold side of the valve.
(3)	
Does the valve hold vacuum?
YES
▶ Go to "Fuel System Inspection" procedure.
NO
▶ Repair air leakage and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.
Fuel System Inspection
1.	
Check the fuel for excessive water, alcohol, or other contaminants. Replace contaminated fuel as necessary.
2.	
Disconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator and inspect the hose for the presence of fuel. If any fuel is present in the vacuum hose, replace the fuel pressure regulator. Go to next step.
3.	
Install a fuel pressure gauge.
4.	
Start engine and let it idle. With the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator disconnected, inspect fuel pressure.
Specification : 320~340kPa(3.26~3.47 kg/cm², 46~49 psi)
5.	
Is fuel pressure within the specification?
YES
▶ Go to "Fuel Injector Inspection" procedure as below
NO
▶ Repair as necessary refer to inspection note as below and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.(Inspection Note)
Fuel Injector Inspection
1.	
Check the fuel injectors for clogging or any restrictions.
A.	
Test Condition : Ignition "OFF".
B.	
Specification : No clogging and restriction.
2.	
Is the fuel injector OK?
YES
▶ Visually/physically inspect the engine mechanical problem. Repair as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.
NO
▶ Check injector for contamination, deterioration, or damage. Substitute with a known-good injector and check for proper operation. If the problem is corrected, replace injector and then go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

btw is yours the 2.4L or the 2.7L?

I will probably have to take it in. I am not that skilled when it comes to fixing engines. We also had some valves fixed due to the timing belt breaking while driving. Could that be a cause? Better not be for an $1800 repair job.

was it happening before the timing belt broke? usually they replace then engine when the belt breaks.

No. They replaced 2 cylinders when the timing belt broke. I put a new emissions hose on and also changed the spark plugs yesterday along with disconnecting the battery for it to reset. Also added some fuel injector cleaner and so far the engine light has not come back on? It runs fine, but would it run that way if the mass air flow sensor was not working? Thanks for all you help.

Well the light came back on yesterday afternoon. Looks like I will take it in next week.
