Default 24 Santa Fe Speedometer stopped working

2004 3.5L FWD
Before I begin troubleshooting, does anyone know of a common cause to this issue? The Cruise control does not turn on...and of course related.
All fuses OK, I did notice a dim'ness to the Odometer LCD prior to it occurring. I've seen the speedo drop to zero once before...but this time it is stopped completely

Where is the speedo sensor located?

Is there a sensor at the wheel (which one) or on the transmission?
Does anyone have a method to ohm and/or test the sensor?

speed sensor it at the back of the transmission on the top(if that makes any sense).

sounds like you may need a new speed sensor or maybe even a new tachometer. i couldn't find anything on testing it unless you have "the HI-SCAN PRO" that the dealership uses.

is your car still under warranty? i'd take it in if it is before you start replacing random things.

I'm surprised there are no specifics on this subject as this a regular problem. But I have the answer.

I located the sensor on top of the transmission, in an easy to reach location from under the car. I pulled it out for inspection, and again once I got the part. Its an easy 15 minute job.

The connector comes off by pressing in the release tab/wire.
A 10mm bolt holds it in.
To remove it, rotate the sensor by pulling on the bolt/flange. Uplift it while rotating so the gear moves.

Close examination of the sensor gear, showed it became worn and almost bald in one spot. This gear can be removed by releasing the E clip.

The gear is $11 at Hyundai.

Note: Becareful not to press hard on the sensors connector while removing. In my case the top of the sensor came free because the glue holding it together was poorly done. I got lucky as the contact and spring inside did not get lost. I glued it together with epoxy and it was OK.

Note: I have 4 Hyundai's in the family. 2 of which experienced the speedometer intermittently stop working. It is an easy fix, but obviously a bigger trend than what the forums are showing.

Having a similar issue can you send a few photos on how/where you get to the gear?

I've heard about it but the dealer states there is no speedo cable on this vehicle. The hmaservice site does not provide details on this either.

Whats the part number for the gear?

Thanks,
BBjr

Found it and completed fix.

I figured out where the stupid thing was located. Location is down below the throttle body air intake. It's not located under the air box like all the pictures show. They are all wrong that's the output speed sensor they keep showing. Not the Vehicle Speed Sensor aka (VSS)

Easy if you have small hands and arms. Not so it your a bigger guy.

Took me just over a 2 hrs. but the speedo now works!!

Here is a URL to a online photo alblum

I'll attach photos later, I need to decrease the size in order to attach to this thread.
