Default Custom Exhaust HP Gains.....

I was just wondering if anyone has done any before and after dynos or "seat of the pants compairisons" on the 2.4 liter engine after installing a custom exhaust. In a few weeks, I'm going to be putting a custom cat-back system on my '02 Sonata with 2.25" mandrel bent pumbing and was just courious on the expected horsepower gains. At the same time, I will be finishing up my custom CAI.

I am proud to say you will be the first. Keep us updated on how everything works out. If you have a really ristrictive system you can see anywhere from 7-12hp gain, maybe more.

Man, I hope I get those kind of numbers. I know one thing, while it's on the rack getting installed, I'll be right there with my digital camera taking plenty of pictures of the whole install. And when it's done, you won't even notice it by looking at it, and hopefully you won't hear it either. You know, that "sleeper" thing again. 8D

I disagree. I doubt you will see anything above 5-7hp. Extra HP gains from exhaust is a misunderstand idea. There are little to none HP gains from aftermarket non-restrictive exhaust systems. Even if you were to install catback from the headers, you MIGHT get 7 hp. MAYBE. :duh:

ummm
I've already done a custom exhuast on my 2.4L 4 Banger
I put a 2.5 in Manderal bent Cat-back system in with a pretty stock looking high flow muffler but i welded a Gibson crome tip at the end because thats the ricey part in me.
I have to say top end power increased dramatically(i really dont have to down shift to 4th gear on the highway for passing power) and i think i gained 5-7 Horsepowers. If you want 7-12 you'll need the whole system (headers)

And i've also HAD a true custom CAI before in my whip and dam the combination of is amazing. On the highway you'll basically never have to down shift to 4th, mi-range power increses alot to. I say an true cold air intake pobably added a good 4-6 horsepowers but i could be wrong about the intake.
Let us know how the custom stuff turns out and take picks of the work; i will post pics of my cat-back soon as i find the pics and my Cai i dismantelled cause for a dumbass driver like me (cant seem to detect water puddles ) its not a good application.
Once i find out what i did to her because of the water puuddle (more like a small lake) i'll start my short-ram intake into a clod air box with forced air comming in project.
Just remember get a muffler that fits your car and since you have a 4-door i suggest kind of something like the IS-300's have (same as mine)

Gundam, isn't that 2.5" exhaust a little too big though? My brother did that to his '89 Sonata, and eventhough it sounded really good and quiet, he lost alot of torque because the 2.5" was too big.

Maybe the twin cam 2.4 moves more air than his old single cam 2.4, but I just want to make sure before I put my exhaust on.

The older Sonata engines were 2.0L, therefor needing a smaller exhaust size.

Not the '89. It was a SOHC 2.4 liter.

yes true i did loose low end torque but it was made up for the mid-range to top-end power but im not finished just with I/H/E set-up(headers comming soon and rebuilding intake system). I still have much more power to put into the motor after i forge the crap out of most the weak parts. I plan on getting 180+ wheel horsepower N/A and if possible financially$$$$ try to get 200 to the wheels(not likely)

so if you dont plan on doing just the basics i guess 2.25 but i really dont want to keep upgrading the parts i've already upgraded because im adding more power and if there still isn't enough back pressure then i can just get a glass-pack that will equal it out the best. Oh and i liked the sound of 2.5 better then 2.25 (ricey part comming out again)
