Default Automatic Transmission Programming

Hey how is everyone? My car is back(finally!) after a costly repair to the transmission(basically a new unit). I've learned not to shift it down now when it is not in the gear I want it to be in. My question to all of you is if there is anyway I could recieve a fix for the programming in the transmission? It LOVES third gear, even all the way down at 5MPH from a rolling stop(yes, yes, thats illegal). Usually I'd shift it down to "2" or even "L" if a huge truck was pulling on me fast. Don't you think that the programming of the transmission(fast upshift, lazy downshift) is in some cases unsafe? At 5MPH, I expect it to be in first gear, not third, and this is with both the ECT on NORM and PWR. Thanks for reading and hope to talk to you all soon!

Thanks
-2liter

Why manually shift? uzzled: Just mash the throttle or if you have a 1stgen Tiburon, disengage the Overdrive button. The ECU is designed to operate within it's programmed parameters. As volitile as Hyundai A/Ts are, I wouldn't even want to mess with it. Perhaps an aftermarket transmission place could reprogram the ECU. Contact Leval 10 www.levelten.com and talk to a rep there.

If your transmission is still in 3rd gear when you are at 5mph then you may have a bad throttle position sensor or TPS. When TPS unit goes bad, the A/T ECU cannot read the throttle position, (doesn't know how fast the engine is running and/or at what RPM), so it electronically kicks the transmission to 3rd gear to save the engine from over revving. If this reads like what is happening with your car, take it back and have the TPS checked out.

Sounds like the infamous pulse generator/wiring may be acting up. Could be loose connection, you can find this union on top of transmission under/behind airbox. Check the wires make sure it's connected, if it is wiggle the wires and restart car..

all of the posts so far are correct in their assumptions, but please take my advice. if you have just had transmission work done and the tranny is still staying in third gear. take it back to the transmission shop. I have been working with my 95 elantra trans for the last three months and it maybe the tps or the pulse gens, but if the CEL is not on, it will not either of them. look to see if the shop plugged your TCU back in ,there is a fail safe in all of the hyundai trannys to stay locked in third gear so you can limp home if need be, but you paid alot to get is fixed(i know$1500 for mine and it is still not fixed)make them look into this. good luck with this, it is a real pain in the butt to fix automatics.

Last time the CEL came on and it tripped to third gear, it was my TPS that had gone bad. The A/T is a weird animal.

I think maybe I was alittle unclear in my last post. I have found from the last three months of troubleshooting my tranny problem, that if it was the tps or the pulse gens, you would get a CEL in the dash. Like was stated in the post before. I will say again look to see if the shop plugged the TCU back in. my problem was caused by something simple, always look to the simplest solutions first. it saves time and money.

Thanks. It will be checked out on Tuesday. Since it's still under warranty I will let the dealership handle it. BUT, I will check said items just in case.
