Default buying a used sonata

ok one of my friends wants to buy an older sonata and spend about $1200-$1500. this is her first car.

can anyone tell me what the engine types were in the Y1 and Y2 sonatas? pros and cons of each model and stuff? she wants power steering and brakes, im pretty sure they come with that but what options and trim models were made? also did some come with alloy wheels???

she is not looking to mod it just have a good dependable car... so basically the best engine and drivetrain she can get. in automatic transmission that is...

so if you would, please post up basically anything you know (from experience or knowledge) about these cars, their makeup and pros and cons. the Y1 is a 89-94 and the Y2 is a 95-96 sonata. thanks in advance!

Default Re: buying a used sonata

i have some info on my site.....it's in my sig. altho my specs page isn't fully up. the 89-91 versions of the sonata had a 2.4L G4CS engine, similar to the DSM 4g64, and the 92-98 sonata had the 2.0L G4CP, similar to the 4g63. kinda odd how they didn't follow the years of the generations....
also, the 89-98 sonatas used the 3.0L G6AT for the V6.....which is what i have heard. i've heard from a few owners that the I4 is just not powerful enough for a family sedan.....not just tuning, but daily driving in general.
all 89-98 sonatas in teh US came in auto only......no sticks.....
as for the styling, i prefer the Y2 over the Y1, but i think Y3 0wnz all hehhe...

and i think trim packages/alloy wheels/etc... depended completely on submodel....base models would be the junk ones that she'd probably want to avoid...

i hope this helps, and if u have any more questions, just ask.

NOT true on that stick comment. I've seen some 97s with 5-speeds, but only with the 2.0L.

Y3 does own in styling as well, hehe...

How dare you say base models are junk?? Mine came with air and cassette, more than a base Accord or Camry of the same year!
