I have a 2002 Sonata 2.4 with 55k miles. Went to the dealership because of a rattle in engine and it turns out it was my timing belt slapping around. The belt had chunks of teeth missing from it. Get this- even thought he car is under full mfr warranty up to 60K- they won't cover the belt cuz its close to the recommended change at 60K. Is this b/s or what?? Cuz it cost me $400!!!
take it to the mechanic's superior, if that don't work, keep on going up the ladder until you get it covered. ANY dealership who likes to make money will try to get things not covered under warranty. it's just not good for business to cover so many things for free.

Really? I took my '01 in for the same reason @ 59xxx and they fixed it w/out any problems. Same deal it had chunks missing out of it. Then again because it's foreign car I take it up the butt and pay those disgusting service fees at all recommended miles because I drive my car alot so they better go the extra mile. Even got extended bumper to bumper to 72K and got some titanium rear brakes done for free and the 100K extended to 120K. Got 76K on it now and really haven't had any problems of note.
Been putting off the $300 service due at this time though. Going to have to bite the bullet and get it done in the next couple weeks.
timing belt is not under warranty, its a normal wear and tear item
just like your 30K is not a warranty or your air filter, oil filter, tires, etc.
timing belt is recommended to be changed at 60K in most cars and thats how it is
your going to have to pay and i suggest you do it unless you want to blow your motor :

Teeth were already gone man, wouldnt be surprised if the motor's already leaking past the valves and slapping slightly. Time for a compression test to see if sealing is alright.:dead:
