Hello, I just wanted to know if aftermarket performance products for the tiburon GT will work for the Sonata GLS since it is the same engine. Also, since it is the same engine and it weighs less than 100 lbs. more than the tibby, why is everyone questioning its power? I have not yet bought my tiburon GT and am STRONGLY considering the Sonata for insurance and other purposes since I'm only 20. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
i think you should test drive both cars before you make a decision. they are two different cars, aimed at two different niche groups. you may find that you like aspects of one car, and then some on the other. as for the aftermarket parts, hyundai (U.S.) has been sitting on its hands for a while now when it comes to its V-6 parts. i think it's going to be a while, regardless, before any major parts come out for 2.7 L tiburon engine. hopefully, they will have enough forsight to make the parts interchangeable with the sonata.
The weight I saw listed on the Sonata GLS was 3,107 lbs. and on the Tiburon GT it was 3,040 lbs. And then I read a review of the sonata somewhere and they were saying it wasn't as powerful as other cars in it's class and that the camry was faster. Also, I believe it was either this board or t-h-c.org board that I saw some posts complaining about the sonata not having enough "umph" in it's engine. I am probably going to test-drive the sonata this weekend so I'll be able to judge for myself. Also, I know there are no aftermarket products for the V-6 engine but I probably wasn't planning on doing anything for a while after I got the car to save up money. Thanks
Both the Tib Gt and the Sonata V6 have 181hp w/ 177lbs of torque
Tib Gt weighs between 3015-3041 depending on the tranny you get.
Sonata V6 weighs 3254 auto (manual not listed)
so there is a 250 to 300lb weight diffence.
There is also a diffence in the suspension of the 2 cars and the gearing.
I too have been considering gettin a Sonata over the Tib Gt due to insurance but would definately suggest test driving both cars.
Hey guys, quick question. First of all, do they sell the new sonata's with 5-speeds and a v-6? Second question, if yes to one, is would a 6-speed from a new tiburon match up with the 2.7 in the sonata manual?
If you are willing to spend the money for a 6-speed, buy the 5-speed 2.7L V6 Sonata (MUST BE the 2.7L V6).
Proceed with removing the 5-speed EVER SO CAREFULLY!!
Replace with new 6-speed transmission. If you bought the 6-speed from the dealership, extreme power to you cause everything will come with it that you need for the install.
Sweet talk your dealership, and if you barely used the 5-speed, you may get lucky and get a bit less then the value of the 5-speed back. Hell if you get $1,000 out of the $3,000 I betcha you would be happy.
If you have the automatic, there is some minor things you need to modify, but its still possible. Only downside is that you spent that little bit extra for wanting an automatic.
Me and my friend went through this thoroughly when he was considering a Sonata GLS (Cdn). Unfortunately he decided to buy an M5 (several decades old though).
Downside, if anything happens with your 6-speed, no guarantees that Hyundai will save your butt. Simply cause its not normal. Although, residual value will be a lot better since your 6-speed Sonata will be one of a kind.
