Default What dose this button do...

One question... i own a 1998 hyundai sonata GL v6 3.0L. Well in the inside of the car there is a button/switch that is a little behind the shifter (auto) and it say's "ECT" and it has two settings "power" and "off" i was just wondering what that did? because i have never been able to figure out what it did exactly...???????

hehehe - it's the POWER BUTTON!!!

Is it an auto?

Because mine is and it has one. And it really is a power button. It apparently changes the shifting pattern to suite more spirited driving. The other is for ecomony.

I know Toyotas had those first. It lets each gear go up to a higher RPM I think. That's what I've heard anyway. I don't think new cars have that anymore though.

I had the same thing on my auto Talon, that switch changes the auto tranny shifting paterns to a higher performance setting. If you floor it youll see it allmost goes to redline before it upshifts, with it off itll go to around 4,800-5,000rpm to upshift. (Redlines @ 6K isnt it?)

If you click off the OD and click on the Power switch youll find you get slightly better launch performance. Well atleast I did in my talon.

it's that. On the 1stgen sonata, it changed the shift pattern(and the O/D button do it too). It shift earlier, and over 60 mph the car stay on the overdrive always... floor it and the tranny won't downshift...

my other does'nt hagve the power button, but the o/d button change the pattern too.. it downshift easier(on o/d at 20 mph to downshift in 1st gear you must floor it but with o/d off only the half of trottle travel do it...)

but it never shift over 5250 rpm(over this line there's no power...)

It hyst changes the shift points. I know that if I have it on "power" under normal acceleration it goes about 1000 rpm higher before it shifts and is more prone to downshift if you give it a wee bit more gas. If you floor it in either mode I don't think the shift points change at all.

about a year a go a was wondering the same thing. I have the same exact car as you just a 97...but if you go and put the power button on you get the full potential of the car...Wether the car has the power setting on or not it will downshift.

Having the power button off apparently saves fuel, but I can't see how it saves that much (especially if you're not driving hard all the time).

As for the OD button, I always keep it off except on the highway. On the highway I think it saves fuel by preventing being in a lower gear, and also allowing for downshifting when needed for hills and such. But in the city, don't use it. Especially if you drive spiritedly.... It just adds wear to the tranny, and with it off you accelerate better.
