Default Weird head lights issue..

My 2000 Sonata GL V6 has developed this problem.
The headlights only can be turned on when the engine is running, otherwise no, I am suspecting battery low/weak etc, however the car starts just fine on even super cold mornings without any hesitation. Is this a battery problem or is it something else with the headlights?
any ideas?

... and when you took the car to the local auto parts store and they performed a free test on your battery and alternator, they told you _____?

The stealership told me that my car battery's cold cranking amps were very low and that I would need a new battery...
And that was a year ago, including one very cold winter ago. I thought I'd replace at the first clear sign of not starting. So I am still waiting for that sign.

Has it always turned on the headlights when it was off ? My car's headlights don't turn on unless the engine is running, I think it's a manufacturer setting.
