Re: What is exactly different between a Sonata and an Eclipse?
>The 2.0L block is essentially the same for the Sonata and the Eclipse, am I wrong? But the different engine bays (and internals) may cause problems.
Yes, they are essentially the same, the Sonata motor is more similar to the first generation eclipse motors used from 1990 - 1992. These are known as 6 bolt flywheel motors. Even though the first generation eclipses were made from 1990 - 1994, the 6 bolt flywheel motors were only made up until 1992. What i hve in my car is a 7 bolt 1998 motor from the 2nd generation eclipse. it's not as strong from factory as the 6 bolt motor, but it does have less km's if planning to keep your internals standard.
>Here's a question - can you take the engine apart and replaced pieces with Eclipse parts? I know the compression is less, and some parts are different (valves/piston?). I know this would be expensive, but say you had a eclipse engine lying around and had to do it anyway... Does anyone know exactly what would have to be changed? I suppose this is a question for a new topic...
This i'm going to partly have to leave to Thomas (Turbo_Hyundai). I think that if you had a complete engine standing by, it would be far more simple to just take out your sonata motor and drop the eclipse one in. If you plan on modifying internals, then perhaps mix-matching might be better. It sounds like you might want to do this from an insurance point of view. Just remember that the insurance company looks at the engine number close by the exhaust manifold.
>I mean - I can think of some obvious things (header/ECU/ect.). And would it even be worth upgrading to a non-turbo Eclipse 2.0? I'm thinking with the vast networks of piping a turbo engine would be easier just transplanted.
I agree. You're right, the ecu is not going to work for the turbo motor, but i believe Thomas has plugged a 1G harness straight into his ecu. The 2G is different though. At a very minimu, if i was doing a mix-match, i would change, ecu, rods, pistons, camshafts, headgasket, exhaust manifold.
I'm not planning on doing this or anything, just wondering in case I ever have to take the engine apart.
