Default different ways of braking?

I've seen the stuff on down-shiftig in snow/ice, but I wanted to know just on regular roads does it help?

I mean, what are the advantages and disadvantages of down-shifting as opposed to using your brakes?

I down-shift a lot, and heard that it's bad for something uzzled:

Downshifting really isn't bad for anything as long as your car is properly maintained and you don't grind anything.

Downshifting will wear on the clutch parts more and doesn't conserve gas as well as disengaging the clutch.

Braking wears on the brakes mores.

It doesn't mean 1 is better then the other, it just means you have to do them at the propper times.

Brakes are WAY easier to change then clutches, so I use my brakes on the street and just let the car coast.

I save my clutch for the track where I use engine braking on every corner.

well when i down shift i found it's best to just put the tibby in 3rd gear after you get below 50. other then that it's pointless. i'd prefer to use the breaks that's why their there.

Clutches have a much longer service life than brakes.

And you should not be using engine braking on the track.

why not?.. most of our cars don't get a hole lot higher than highway speeds... and neither would yours.

"And you should not be using engine braking on the track."

I'm sorry, but if your not using engine braking on a race track then you aren't driving correctly and you're surely not pushing your car as hard as what you could.

WytchDctr, what part of Texas are you at and what tracks do you frequent? I've been to Hallett in Oklahoma(just west of Tulsa) and I've ridden as a codriver at MotorSport Ranch. There's a new track being built as we speak north of Dallas that is supposed to start drawing Cart and Indy cars when it's done!!

If you're pushing your car hard enough you shouldn't have time to engine brake on corner entry.
