Default Road course tire pressure

The last time I drove on a road course, I damn near wore down my BFG race tires down to nothing. I Believe this happened because the tire pressures were not right. By the end of each heat, the tires were showing signs of chunking(overheating). I know my driving style didn't help(taking corners VERY fast and 4 wheel drifting a couple) but I know that the tire pressure were not optimal.

So, in just over a month from now, I'll be going back out to the same road course again, but this time instead of running BFG Comp T/A R-1 race tires, I'll be running Falken Azzenis Sport street tires of the same size(195/60/14). I don't want to wear these tires down as fast as I wore my race tires down so I want to know what tire pressures you people are using as a starting point.

The only way to do it right is with a pyrometer. Period.

And remember, for road race suggested pressures are hot pressures. AKA you should warm up the tires, then recheck pressures.

You're gonna have to get some tyre temperature samples done bro, maybe a warmup lap and then a single lap, then back into the pits for sampling; should tell you whats wrong exactly.

Good luck!

well, the old race tires I was using were just that, old! They were about 4 years old when I bought them so I think that was part of the reason why they started chunking at the end of sessions. And, come to find out just within the last couple of days, they are designed for autocross, not road course!

I guess I'll start brown nosing some friends locally that have a tire pyrometer to see if I can loan it for a weekend then!

Ok, I now know what tire pressure to run at. In the end, I ran 35.5 psi up front cold and 35 psi in the rear tires, cold. After a 20 minute session, the front tire pressures had raissen to 42 psi and the rears had gone up to 37 psi. At this pressure, the tires were not rolling over at all, and they were also not over heating till the very end of the session too.

However, I still managed to wear down both front tires!! And they were brand new! I can still drive them on the street, but for the next autocross or road crouse event I'm gonna have to rotate them.

Are those tires supposed to be shaved or heat cycled? I hear the bfg are supposed to be used hard and used fast.uzzled:

Right now I'm using Falken Azzenis Sport tires. They aren't shaved or heat cycled. The old BFG race tires I had were used when I bought them. They had only a VERY small amount of tread left on them when I bought them, but I don't know if they were heat cycled or not.
