Default Re: Winter driving techniques

down shifting in winter is very good for control if you do it right, and it's very good in snow conditions lowers your stoping distance and decreases the likelyhood of locking up your front brakes since your not pushing as hard if you know how to properly downshift and brake.

thats just me plus driving in winter kicks ass. except for waking up at 4 in the morning to go to work.

My company is sending all of the field techs to a driving school at the local technical college. But before you laugh check this out.....We spent like 8 hours on watered down skid pads and decision courses. They put everyone in old state patrol cars and have you take turns at various speeds to show you when a car loses control. We also dodged various obstacles and practiced getting out of a spin. I dont think ive ever had so much fun with an educational task before. some of the best trainning i have ever taken.

The cars are rigged with antilock brakes that can be turned on and off with a switch so you do all the courses with them and without them to see the diference. Also there is a button that the passenger controls that instantly locks up the wheels. Your buddy uses it to try and wipe you out at critical times .PLEASE DO YOURSELVES A FAVOR and see if your local tech schools have anything like this. You will see real world effects and get plenty of practice with an out of control car.and like I said you will have a BLAST doing it. As a side benefit there are insurance companies that will give a discounted rate if you take classes like this.
