down shifting in winter is very good for control if you do it right, and it's very good in snow conditions lowers your stoping distance and decreases the likelyhood of locking up your front brakes since your not pushing as hard if you know how to properly downshift and brake.
thats just me plus driving in winter kicks ass. except for waking up at 4 in the morning to go to work.
