Default Re: How to replace your struts

well i have a big problem ... i got my 2002 elantra lowered 1.8 inches with the B&G sport suspension and i have a set of KYB-GR2 struts and there is a REALLY BAD knocking in the back ... now i was wondering if it's a common problem with this car and if any one of you guys might know what's going on. i know that it might be a bushing or a strut mount but nobody seems to be able to find out for sure and i'm running out of things to look for.

140,000 miles and its a 2000? Dam.. thats ALOT of miles. I have 140 and i only have a 97. eeek...

Yeah, Autozone should carry the good brands. Try not to pick the cheapest ones, and dont pick the most expensive, unless you REALLY love the car. Pick like the second or third from the top (top being most expensive) when they give you a price list.

Good luck, and welcome to the boards.

Thanks for the welcome.....will.....Well i only got to the struts today.....after my 5 week long motorcycle trip out west....anyway it took me about 3 hours to do just the right rear...tomorrow ill do the left but it should only take me an hour...the left side was rusted bad...water was getting in from somewhere...even the impact wrench was useless.....i had to hacksaw the shaf in half...the other side is already broke loose.....i dont think ill do the front unless its necessary...
What a great forum to have when you are taking on jobs like this.....thanks to skierd for the great step by step and photos....Bob

Default Cutting springs = Bad!

This is in reply to chopping springs! This is one of the worst suspension decisions you can make! Chopping springs will result in poor ride quality (constant bouncing) and huge decrease in all around perfromance
1. Increase in breaking distance
2. Excessive Body roll
3. horrible handling
4. Bottoming out
5. not to mention tire wear and camber changes

This is def not advised even if you are just going for the the "lowered look" and not looking for any performance gains. This mod has nothing to gain and everything to loose!

Some food for thought!

Sticky Michelins, H&R springs, and KYB struts, my Tib it handles beautifully!

a thing about lc's is that if you want perfect camber after mag&tire install.you need camber bolts to get some positive camber..or else your fresh tire's inner shoulder blocks will be showing steel cord after a month or 2.

BTW:I wish kumho still made the ecsta 711...those were great tire's for the money..

or slot the top bolt holes in the bottom mounts, since camber bolts are such a freakin PITA

I must go around corners WAY too fast, I run -1 degree and the outside of my tires still wear more than the insides.
