I posted this in the Ksport groupbuy post, but its probably better to make a new topic. Well here it goes.
OK...i must be a real dumbass or have bad luck...but i raised the car higher then i had it before with my eibachs and for some reason, every corner is rubbing after i drive for 5 mins. When i get out of the car, the tires are threading and balding in spots, leaving lines of threaded rubber. Would it be solved after an alignment? or is this a problem. I have 195/60R14s, can this be the problem of too wide of a wheel setting? Oh and BTW is there a specific right/left for these? or are both front coilovers the same on either side because right now my tires are slanted to the side when im supposed be straight. Right now the handling is very loose, but i think its because i need a alignment badly. I know for now im the only idiot with problems from this coilover, but can someone give there input on how to fix this problem...thanks again.
Skierd: Ill try to get pics. Yeah..ill get an alignment and see how that goes first, but i never had a problem with a 1.5" drop with rubbing. And from the looks of the height it looks like about the same height has the drop i had before in the rear and even higher in the front. But for the am i sure its rubbing...when im driving, it sounds like im drifting going about 20MPH on a straightway. Can it be something else?
Are you sure that your spring tension is high enough? You know, that nut that threads along the body of the shock adjusts the spring tension. Maybe your springs are not at a high enough tension and the shocks are steadily bleeding down until you begin to rub. In what way are your wheels tilted when you are supposed to go straight? Do you mean cambered or toed? :hmmm:
I would say that your front wheels are toed out badly-toe out means that the tires are pointed away from the car in the front(the left wheel trying to turn left while the right wheel is trying to turn right if you know what I mean) Toe out is just the opposite. This severe toe in is causing the road to rub sideways on the tire as you go down the road-your cause of the rapid tire wear and screeching at 20 mph. An alignment will definately fix this problem for you. Unless there is some other problem too. But I would get an alignment and see what happens from there.
Good luck, and I hope I don't have these problems-just paypaled mike for a set, hehe. Hey, how long did it take for him to reply to your e-mails? I paypaled him and asked him to confirm it and never got a response. Just thought I'd ask. Thanks.
Yeah i think i got some really bad toe in then...because the tires are going to opposite way, and it does make sense that its rubbing the outside of the tire sideways while driving. I guess ill have to wait til monday to get an alignment, they should be able to fix all the toe in and maybe adjust it for me to a better height along with the right camber adjustments. Thanks for your response. Btw, he replied pretty quick when i sent him money, but he was also on AIM and i told him like a minute after i sent him the payments. But overall, Mike has great rapport with his customers.
Heh. You definately need to get things aligned after.
My toe before the alignment was: -1.38 left, and -2.76 right.
It was weird, made bad sounds, and drove funky. Much better now. I actually managed to eyeball the camber to be about right, which surprised me.
It was a huge pain to install them though, as I'd never done it before. ^^; For the first few days, I kept worrying that I'd messed up and a bolt or two was too loose and going to get stripped or break. But, several hundred miles later, everything's still holding on just fine.
Anyone who's using an elantra, or possibly a tiburon...any suggestions on the back struts? I think there's a bit of a gap around the opening that was plugged originally by a rubber plug. But being as it doesn't fit any more, suggestions on closing up that gap?
And for the rears, does the height of the sway bar mounting matter, as long as both sides are the same height?
Does this kit come with any hardware to mount the rear sway bars? I thought there would be an aluminum peice that would bolt on along with the bottom strut to knuckle mounting bolts? If there is not one I will be upset but I can make them on my own with my welding setup(I am lucky to have one). If they do not, I am suprised that no-one complained. Anyways, I would try to get them mounted at a similar hieght to stock. Just take a tape measure and measure how high on the strut and how far out from the strut the stock setup has the hole, and then make a plate that would bolt to the strut to knuckle bolts and bend over to mount the sway bar stabalizer link in the same location as the stock setup. You might have clearance problems like the links hitting the strut or something if you try and move the location of this mount, but I am not sure. I have not gotten a response from Mike in over a day, so I suppose it is because it is a weekend. He said if I paid him this weekend, he would ship them out on monday, so I will be waiting for a response and tracking # tomorrow. Good luck with the alignment and thanks for the info.
Yes, there are sway bar mountings. It's a peice which goes above the knuckle mount, and can be adjusted up or down by spining. It has two allen keyed bolts that you tighten to keep it from rotating.
...well, at least mine did. Yours too, probably, as we've most likely got the same ones.
Anyhow. It's just like the old mounting, in that you attach the linkage to it, which attaches to the sway bar. If you're doing it yourself, I recommend taking both ends off before sticking the new strut in on either end. ^^; I detached it from one end, then reattached, and wondered why I couoldn't get the other side off. x.x
I am glad to hear that information. I was worried I would have to spend extra time making my own mounts.
I suppose you wanted to see if you could stiffen up the rear sway bar by moving the mounting hieght? I don't know if that would stiffen it up or not. You could do a trial and error test and see if it stiffens it up when you raise or lower the mounts. It won't hurt anything as long as you will clear the strut and any other obstacles under there. If you do try it out, let me know what you come up with.
Any member with these coilovers, would you mind labelling the parts of the coilovers for us? such as the spring perch, the thing that adjusts the dampening, the thing that adjusts the height, etc. thanks.. sorry i jsut dont want to mess these up, and they dont come with instructions..and this is my first coilovers
I would do it, but being as I've allready stuck all mine on my car...that'd mean removing them. x.x
Might remove the front and raise it about half an inch. I sort of over lowered it from what I had thought I was setting it to. ^^;
Anyhow, setting the damper is a bit of a pain; I've had to leave my back seat backrest unbolted so I could get to them. Still firmly attached, just have to shove it up hard and it'll eventually come off. ^_^;
As far as the height goes, I just stuck it about where it was before. I don't think that the height on the strut will make much diference though, the sway bar freely rotated up and down when both sides were detached. (didn't come off the stock one when I had attached it to the diferently heighted other coilover installed side as it was under load. x.x)
