there are 2 wires in the plug one is red which i believe is positive and one is black and i dont know if that is the ground or the brake wire, would seem like the brake wire because the instructions want me to hook both up. would it be safe to try trial and error? there is only 2 ways it can go, but i don't want to short out all my wires.

I am kind of lost as to what you are talking about red should be positive when you hit your brake, black is probably ground. As far as it coming on then going off I would have guessed you didn't ground the neon. Where are you connecting to? Cause it sounds like you may have tapped into the taillight wire instead of the brake light. Are you finding the wires right at the taillight or at the third brake light?
