Default Where to get breaks done? dealer?

I have 45k miles on my 2000 elantra. My brakes are cruncing bad, Im assuming I needed to get them replaced along time ago (im in the learning process about this stuff)

Can anyone tell me if I should take it to get done at the dealer? and what cost Im looking at? If not the dealer, then where is a good place for break service? What costs am I looking at either way? and are there any specific plus/negatives between taking it to the dealer or not? There is a Firestone nearby also..

THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!!

changing out brake pads is easy, 20min if your quick. I'm sure theres a post somewhere that tells you how to do it for your particular application... but if you want good break service and not have to do it yourself, I can only tell you to avoid firestone at all costs, and to tell wherever you go to use Hyundai parts, anything else is garbage unless it's a real performance pad. hope that helped

Sounds like you may also end up replacing rotors (brake discs).

I used to be hardcore about going to the dealer. Not anymore... at least not for brakes. There is a local Just Brakes here that I trust and do work at a fraction of the dealer cost, and much quicker.

If you have to replace rotors, I would advise you not to use Hyundai parts. The Hyundai rotors are notorious for warping on the first hard brake. Brembo makes OEM style rotors that will last and handle the heat. (That's what I had done.)

thanks guys.. I guess ill ask around here and see who may be good for breaks. I dont want to have to pay an arm and a leg at the dealer if I dont have to. I cant do them myself at the moment because I have nowhere to do the work. Thanks

Dont go to Firestone. First they'll rip you off, and hassle you into getting other "repairs" done. I wouldn't suggest going to the dealer either, as they charge an arm and a leg. Call around to different shops asking for a quote. Do you have an Autozone near you? If so pick up the parts and pay a buddy 20 bucks to do it for you. Or take the parts to a shop and they should be willing to put them on cheap. Otherwise I'll I can say is that places will rape you on brakes, so call around. But seriously they are very very easy to do yourself. I think they're about as easy as changing wipers on some cars...lol.

get a chiltons or something, they sell them at autozone, and then do it yourself, it will save you loads of money. after pratice, it will take you no longer than 20 mins. my best is 12 mins.

Well after some more thought, Id almost like to do them myself but I really have no idea what the process is. I know the pads are supposed to be easy, but what about the rotors?

Well guys, I took it to the dealer saturday to get looked at. They wanted 90$ just to look at it, but it turns out one of my friends works there.. and he called me and told me to bring it in this morning. Which I did, hes taking care of me. Brakes & Rotors for $250, bealts for $100 and doing the bearings under warranty even though they arent.

Im happy about this deal, although after doing some research about doing it myself, i was almost looking forward to it. Maybe next time. Thanks for the info.
