Default New York DMV inspection on Canadian Accent [info plz]

I'm moving to Syracuse, New York from Canada (work) and I have on my 02 1.6L Accent an aftermarket exhaust system: 4-2-1 header, cat, resonator, sharkracing catback and a cold air intake. I have no CEL and I'm sure I'm fine in terms of the emissions/db but will I pass given the aftermarket parts?

any advice is welcome! I'm moving soon and don't want any nightmares..

thank you very much for your help.

Wait wait wait, are you registering it down there? I don't know if you can do that without a lot of paperwork, since the car is Canadian spec...

Are you moving down there permanetly or temporarily? If it's just for a couple years or so, you may be better off keeping it registered and insured in Canada. I did the reverse of what you're doing; I moved to Canada from NY. I've kept it registered and insured in NY and have had no problems driving it around, other than having to make a trip home to have the inspection and registration renwed. But it's cheaper for me in the long run.

If you are going to go ahead and do the inspection, they scan your OBD port so if your codes are clear you will be fine.

@Tibbychick: I'm going for two years max but Candian insurance will not cover me for that long in USA. You have a US insurance company that was willing to cover you in Canada for two years? I was told that I can import the car temporarily as a contract worker so it should not be too bad.

Yeah I have State Farm and I told them I was gonna be in school for 2 years. They don't care, so long as I pay my bill on time! You could always just not tell them how long you're going, lol.

Oh absolutely. Well I dont know how strict they are upstate but unless you're racing around everywhere, you'll be fine. The only cops who might harass you are state troopers but Ive never had a problem with them. Ive been pulled over many times for speeding and other things, and never have they asked what my mods were or even asked to look under the hood. They really dont care. I never had to show a cop under my hood until I came up to Ontario, lol.

So yeah, just drive normally and you'll be fine. They wont make you take anything off.

I see. Well if you're only going down there temporarily then you can't get it done anyway. In order to have a NYS inspection done, it has to be registered in NY, and to do that, you would have to import the vehicle when you enter the country. Which is pointless if you aren't moving down there permanently. I don't know how the process goes for temporary importation, I think they just let you bring the vehicle in with your work permit, so it's not officially imported.

Just keep it registered and insured in Quebec while you are in NY. Get the emissions done before you go. Don't tell your insurance company how long you are going for. I told mine I was going away to school. They're pretty lenient about it.

You know what, check out New York State Department of Motor Vehicles - NYS DMV - NYSDMV - Driver - Vehicle, that's New York states dmv website, I was looking at it the other day to see how importation works.

Thank you for the information, I already checked this with DMV. I need to have a NY license and registration after 90 days of residency so unfortunately I don't have a choice and yes it can be done (I have the forms). I need to get it inspected and I wonder if it's worth trying or if I should drive it back to Canada and lease something here. I have the mods in my signature + clear corners- how will I do at the inspection and how does it exactly work?

Please let me know your impressions, I don't have internet at home so it takes a while for me to answer (I'm at work) but your replies are very useful information for me.

thx

hold it, hold it....

firstly, do you have a permanent canadian address?

do your parents live in canadia?

would your canuckistanian parents be willing to accomodate an address change on your cananadalandian license? (this requires nothing more than a signature and a new i.d. card)

if you are able to keep a canoodlinanistanian license, then there is absolutely no reason to pay our high insurance and deal with our new and improved nazisation inspection.
