This is the idea of a Mexican holiday? It basically comes down to Mexico defaulting on international loans. On May 5, 1862 the French tried to make Mexico pay by force.

Mexico ended up being led by an Austrian, appointed by Napoleon Bonaparte who happened to be a relative. Mexico was run by the appointed “Maximillian of Austria” until 1867. Under pressure from the United States, France withdrew from Mexico and turned the government back over to the Mexican people. You're welcome, Mexico.

So basically Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of Mexico not making good on loans and having the USA bail their asses out. I’ll drink to that!
