Anybody found a way to disable the annoying seatbelt chime on the 06' Sonata?

Thanks

by wearing your seatbelt
BURN!!
I think there is a plug under the seat that you disconnect,
I have a little connecter that goes under my seat I unpluged when removing the seat to take my carpet out and have never pluged it back in.

I am not saying that you have to wear your seat belt, but is highly suggested if you want to try to survive an accident.
If you unplug the seat belt pretentioner like he's talkin.. Then the Air bag light will be on.. And the air bags may or may not deploy.
Seat Belt Chime - Fixed!!!

Here's how to disable the chime WITHOUT disabling the airbag sensors. Like imcastock said, if you disconnect the plug, you WILL get the "Airbag" light since that wiring harness also feeds to another sensor right next to the seatbelt buckle.

Disclaimer: I am in no way taking any responsibility for any consequential results from this DIY. If you get seriously injured, maimed, dismembered or die because you forgot to put on your seatbelt, you assume full responsibility!

OK, here goes:

1) Look at the seatbelt buckle next to the center console glove compartment and you'll notice two little Torx screws. They're the "tamper-proof" kind, so you'll need find the exact size for this DIY. They usually sell 'em in a set so that'll be your best bet.

2) Remove the Torx screws and pull back that cover. Inside of that cover, you'll see a little circuit board with a black sliding contact. Simply remove that contact from the board and TA-DA, you've silenced the annoying chime.

Explanation: The circuit (blue and yellow wires) is normally closed when the black sliding contact is in the outermost (seatbelt released) position. Once you've buckled the belt, it opens the contact. This is what you've done on a permanent basis.

I hope this helps everyone who's been driven crazy by the seatbelt chime that refuses to turn off. Good luck!

Most excellent, does this apply for 2007's as well?
The seatbelt chime, as well as the key in ign chime is the same unit and it is integrated with the BCM. The BCM will also let you know that wires are disconnected on some circuits.
cclngthr,

Yes, you are correct. Most all of the safety features tie back to the BCM (Body Control Module). My understanding (potentially limited) is that the BCM will fire a charge in the seatbelt connector to "pretension" the seatbelt in the event of a collision. By removing the little black connector, you are essentially telling the BCM that the seatbelt is connected. Ultimately, if you were to get into an accident without your seatbelt connected, the BCM might fire that charge (which would do nothing), so you'd be depending on your airbags to hold you in place. Again, I'm not recommending you drive around without your seatbelt. But when I leave my driveway and drive 200ft to pick up my mail, sometimes putting on your seatbelt to take it off 10 seconds later in a 10mph zone seems a bit unnecessary.

Old Dude,

Yes, it will work on 2007's. I have an '07 SE and my car is the basis of this writeup. I've had this "mod" on my car for 7000 miles now and there are not warning lights, and no MIL/CEL's with regards to disabling the seatbelt chime. The key-in-the-ignition sound, which uses the same chime is unaffected and works just fine.

Hope this helps!

In the event of a crash.. The SRS module does all the thinking of firing or not firing the air bags and or pretentioners.
I bought my Sonata about a month ago, and my prime complaint has been the seat belt chime. I’ve looked at a lot of different sites to find a defeat, but it seems most all of these topics turn into a debate of wearing seat belts.

Thank you for what sounds like a very straight forward DIY. I can’t wait to try it out later tonight (stupid work)!
take the switch under the seat that goes to teh sensor, cut it, solder the two ends together. Not the part that goes to the clip, the other two wires.
I removed the buckle slider contact and it silenced the seatbelt chime as advertised. The only problem now is that the car knows it has been tampered with. Putting the slider back in doesn't pacify the SRI indicator on the dash. I'm assuming that I have to take it to a dealer now to have the SRS system reset. Or is there some way I can reset it? Can they tell the slider is missing (other than the absence of the chime) or do they just do a reset on the computer module?

They will examine the wiring and rewire the system back to factory specifications at customer cost. The system is on a CAN line to the ECU and will be noticed every time the ECU is scanned for trouble codes if it is not redone.

I took the New Model NF training and this is one of the things the instructor was adament about. People want to disable the chime and on the newer cars, the way the electrical system is designed and wired up, when you tamper with the factory system, the ECU can set a DTC.
So putting the slider back in and driving it for awhile won't eventually extinguish the SRI light?

No. The NF ECU has to be manually reset with a scan tool. The code remains in memory.
That's too bad. Just one more question before I give up on this endeavor. If after everything is restored to normal with no codes present, I would disconnect the buckle slider while having the battery disconnected, would the SRS know the slider was gone once the battery is reconnected?

Yep. The ECU looks for certain things to make sure everything is working and the buckle slider is one thing in the SRS system that the system checks to make sure it is functional to operate the systems. If 1 thing is disconnected/not working, the SRS system will be turned off and the SRS light will be on.

Hate to say it, but the newer cars are becoming more difficult to defeat the factory systems.
Oh well. Looks like I'll be removing the console and muting/nuking the sucker then. Thanks for all the info.

It is integrated with the BCM. There is no separate chime as with the older cars. You would also risk damaging the BCM if you try to remove it.
