I just had a quick look at my wife's 1999 Tiburon and notice it has the same air intake as the 2000. But I also noticed that the air intake seems to be behind the seal of the hood when it shuts. On the 2000, they've got an air intake with a little deflector to help channel air to the intake. With my quick look I couldn't see any such channel on the 1999.

Maybe that's why my 2000 seems a bit faster than the 1999? I always attributed it to the shifting (it's a bit crisper in the 2000), but maybe it doesn't get as much air.

Any thoughts? I'll have to have a better look again later.

You're right. There's the little seal there blocking more air from coming into the intake, instead, it has to rely on air that has been through the radiator and cycled it's way to the top of the hood. For obvious reasons, this is less than desireable.

If I remember right, Random removed the black part from his hood and it works fine still .

4DoorGL is right, take that damn resonator and air duct off, and run a good ol' dryer hose to the stock air box, and run it down to the front air damn and tie it securly there. Make sure you get some type of screen mesh to protect from bugs, pebbles, etc that might come up from the dryer hose, I find screen door mesh works good.
Then you will have a Poor man's CAI

That Dryer Hose method is also refered to as the "Snorkus" mod.

It's what we used to do in the old days before anyone made CAI's for Tibbies.

here is the "updated" modified "snorkus" with a Cone style air filter.

I had also posted another version of this under free mods in the Accent forum. (I think??)
The way I posted did not give tou the advantage of the K&N filter but would be cheaper and still give you cold air using the factory filter.
