yes, it is. I had to replace the engine on my last 1.5L when the belt snapped at 99K. You definately want to get the timing belt replaced at the recommended time (60K).

Basically, an interference motor is an engine where the if the valves are down and the pistons are up, you have a couple thousand dollars of repair bills when the timing belt breaks.
In a non-interference motor, the timing belt could break and you won't touch the valves.
