Hey guys, great site you all have here, very informative.

My name is Billy, and I'm a Volvo guy normally, but will work on and appreciate just about any type of car, and I spend a decent amount of time on forums, so YES, I searched before asking this most n00bish of questions :-D

A good friend of mine has a 2000 Tiburon (it's an auto) that has been giving us some starting problems as of late. The car will run just fine one day (sometimes even that SAME day...) and then won't start all of a sudden. Key in...turn to start, and we get ONE solid click, that comes from the starter/solenoid itself. Then a few days later, without any other changes to the vehicle, it will start again normally.

I have run several rudimentary checks/tests to try and narrow down the source of these problems. To date, I have:

tried starting the car in both P and N (to hopefully eliminate the PNP switch as a problem)
tried starting the car with jumper cables hooked up to my Volvo...still only one click
wiggled the battery cables, they're tight (need to clean them too i guess)
wiggled wires at the starter (it was dark, and i didn't have a flashlight, but they FELT tight)
hit the starter with a big wrench while trying to crank it...nothin

So, what I'd like to know is what does this sound like to you? And just to quell the usual "It's your battery....or maybe your alternator"...it's not. it may be the connections at the terminals, but otherwise both of those things are working just fine (tested while car was running properly). Is there a starter relay that could be bad, even tho the click is coming from the starter/solenoid itself? Can I just replace the solenoid if it turns out to be the problem, or will the whole starter have to be replaced? And finally, where is the best place to get parts online without getting raped on prices?

Thanks guys, can't wait to see what you all think the problem is....

i had the same problem and pretty much figured it out right away that is was the starter. reason is, is that the shaft in the starter is not catching to the flywheel, you can the starter tested but won't do anything. i had mine tested and they said that is was still good, what f***ing idoits.

but if i were you try the starter first if you can hear the injectors working then all most to nothing it is the starter.

from my expereince it would be the starter but i don't know your case might be different. but check it out first.

Thanks, Lilo, I'm having similar thoughts as well.

It's not that the car is cranking and just not running, it isn't cranking at all. I hear (and feel) one click coming from the starter (under the intake manifold, near the trans sorta) each time we try and turn the key to the start position.

Anyone know of any good online parts places that will have good prices on something like a starter? I found that prices at the autoparts stores vary from about $108 reman to $170 new, and they all seem to come with the solenoid/relay as well.

Thanks in advance,

Billy

yeah, that's true I guess. Found it at www.thepartsbin.com for like $109, probably will go that route unless NAPA or Advance has a smoking deal after the core charge.

Any fresh thoughts/ideas?

Thanks so far Lilo :)

I thought it was just me . . .

I started having this problem with my '01 in the summer of 2005. Whenever it was really warm out, the damn thing won't turn over. I took it in and they said the battery was shot. Then it happened again in the fall of 2005 and they replaced the battery again. It did it all this summer too and I just ignored it - it always finally turns over after sticking with it long enough. I did notice on this this last brand new battery that I was given (official Hyundai stock) and the damn thing is COVERED with corrosion on the contacts. It looks like a coral reef. I'm starting to suspect that Hyundai batteries might SUCK. Any thoughts?

Hi all,

I've had a similar problem with my 2001 Tiburon but with the difference that the engine IS turning but wont start.

It can happen at any time, in any kind of weather.

It feel's like the engine floods itself when i try to start it.

I was told recently that it could be the temp sensor on the computer

I'm a big ''0'' in car mechanics so if anyone has experienced the same thing
and have been able to locate the problem I would appreciate some info.

I've been to 3 garages and a battery/cables/spark plugs/starter/fuses were
changed....I'm really tired of wasting my money on so called experts.

Thanks in advance!
