2001 Accent - Alternator Fire!!

937 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Ravinaziankid
Ive got a 2001 Hyundai Accent with approx. 70, 000 miles on it.

My alternator just caught on fire and i luckily was able to extinguish before it expanded beyond 2 wires connecting to it. Ive havent replaced or inspected it beyond a visual look(just happened today and its around the corner from my house - luckily).

Here are my questions:

1) What are the most common causes of alternator fires for this model?

2) I just had ALL my belts changed one month ago (including the alternator belt) and put just under 2,000 miles on it since then. Belts look fine. Possible faulty replacement?

3) Was there a statement issued in the past year regarding faulty Alternators or Alternator belts for all 2001+ Hyundai's past 50K or 60K (or am i confusing this with something else?).

Possibly the car wasnt run very much and just sat for a long ass time. The little wire/bristles in the alt went all blah and now it wont pull enough power. Get it checked out. This happened recently to my dad in my grandmothers car. LIke a 98 w/ like 20k miles on it.. It sat a lot. It caught fire.

I do the same thing now, I only drive the car once in a while and just move it usually when i need to find parking because of alternate side parking here. Can that be the cause of my car needing a jump start everytime I drive and turn it off?
