Excuse the name, I registered with this name thinking I would get a new Tiburon before running that across my wife and after talking, decided to go with a bit cheaper car. What we're thinking of doing is getting a black GLS and putting grey ghost flames on the sides. Then I want to just do minor mods that add 5-10 horsepower here and there. I have heard bad things about the hyundai auto transmitions though and I live in San Antonio, TX and they're adding onto the highway our apt. is off of so the traffic is gonna be horrible for the next 5 years while they expand. So the manual is out of the question. But what I wanted to know is if buying the elantra in auto and then putting money into it is a waste or not. I want to be able to use the extra hp I add to it and wanted to know if any of the auto elantra owners have trouble accelerating or anything like that. I had a 2000 accent and loved it, but I became frustrated with it's power and was told I should have gotten a stick. Stick with a stick. Better control of your power by keeping it in the mid rpms, and no power robbing torque converter. Traffic congestion is only an excuss for a lazy left foot. Test drive an auto and a manual. You won't be sorry when you end up with the five speed!!

Auto's aren't as bad as they used to be, which is effident by the Gas Mileages the Stick vs. Auto. Most if not all Automatics have full electronically locking torque converters, so no more SLIP.

But I like you prefer the STICK. I can't stand the way if you push the gas a little bit the car shifts down 2 gears and sounds like it's gonna BLOW.

So no flooring it in 4 gear to speed up, unless you want to do 5,000 RPM and drop to 2nd gear.

I have the '02 GLS with the 5 spd.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0> Unless you spend long stretchs of time on freeways or in
bumper to bumper traffic everyday
get the 5spd. Add a cold air intake
and maybe a racing pulley (I just
had one installed) and you've got yourself a budget priced euro-sports sedan...with 150+ Hp. Exhaust is another option of course for a lil more HP. A CAI will run a little over $200 bucks..same with the Racing Pulleys from Unorthodox Racing. Either do whats practical and sacrifice some performance fun, or go for the full-on driving experience and just deal with traffic...I do. My little GLS is quick and fun to run through the gears...wouldnt change that. I agree with the prior post...test drive. Just be aware that real performance is in the higher rpms in these cars.

The auto transmission isn't that bad. It shifts fine and its got decent acceleration. Of course the manual version will be quicker. With my GT, if I'm cruising in fourth or third and I slam on the gas the tranny just slowly accelerates. It doesn't shift down. I guess I am going fast enough to were the tranny thinks it cant shift down. Other than tha, its ok. I beat my friend in his manual Civic. and he power shifts like a mad man.

No offence to anyone here with an auto. My preference is to never buy a 4cyl car with an auto. I'd NEVER do it. From my point of view I got this Elantra for practicality. A 5-speed will out mileage an auto and out accelerate it. Now a V6 or V8 powered vehilce might be a different story for me. Get what you want! Just know there is more performance from a 5-speed in these cars.
