I guess right now for those that might care hehe. Since it is a 2002 it will still have full warranty on the car itself. Before of course the swap out.
So when we originally discussed it with the owner of the dealership, he said no way you can physically do it. After getting info from people on the boards and from the service department they said yes you can do it.
So then warranty came into play. The DSM of Hyundai for our district was in and was going over paper work with the service manager, while I was getting an oil change. I didn't think of talking to them, but then right before I turned down the street to my house, then turned it right around and went back to the dealership.
Talked to my service manager and DSM and asked if we could do the swap. They said yes thats fine. Then I asked what about warranty. Both the DSM and the service manager agreed that the warranty on the transmission will obviously be gone, and we will still have warranty on the rest of the car.
The next day me and 6speed went in to look at Sonatas again, and basically got into this small debate with the sales guy whether we can physically do it. He said "I worked for many years on cars blah blah blah, you can't do it". I told him, "I work in front of a computer all day, the 2002 Sonata has a 5-speed manual in the US as well as the rest of the world. Would Hyundai be stupid enough to make the car so you CANNOT put a manual transmission in the 2,000 or so cars going to Canada? Obviously not. The only work you will need to do is get the proper wiring harnesses, and hope the shafts from the manual 6-speed can fit in there and away you go." Moron as he is. "Well you will have to then bang out the firewall." I felt like telling him hes a moron BUT I said "Its a FWD car, why the hell would I need to touch the firewall?" I forgot to mention, this guy lives and breathes RWD domestic muscle cars. Too bad he isn't quite fit enough to sell FWD Hyundai's then.
So fuming mad he goes to the owner of the dealership, and says "will their warranty be void if they swap it out?" Owner says "yes all of it." So then that made him feel all happy. I said "ok whatever, I ll be back with a letter and signatures with the go ahead from the owners boss." I didn't want to argue with the owner cause he is without a doubt the coolest Hyundai dealership owner in the world, and I like the way he treats me as a customer, cause I have never ever been treated so good.
So well as it stands, I need to go into the dealership probally Monday and talk to the service manager, and get him to sign a basic letter or if he wants to type one up himself thats fine, and I will get signature from him next time he sees the DSM that way my ass and 6-speed's ass is covered. Just make a couple photocopies, give it to our dealership, and keep one in the glove box, keep the original locked up nice and tight if we ever have to bring it out.
Anyway, just want to say, if 6speed ever does it, it will have probally the best resale value you could find. 6-speed V6 2.7L Sonata, cars like it, 0. The appeal to young buyers in the future looking for a tuner car with a 6-speed, and a huge aftermarket (all 2.7L parts on the Tiburon should work for the 2.7L in the Sonata) will be excellent.
