Hi everyone, I'm new here. I've been thinking of getting a 2003 Tib V6 GT. I have a question, how much slower are the autos from the manuals? If I get one it will more than likely be the auto with the shiftronic transmission. Also how much peppier will the shiftronic make the car? I currently drive a 1999 Mustang and I know that Ford's autos are a whole lot slower than the manuals, but I've heard that GM's autos are just as quick if not quicker than their manuals. I was just wondering what the case was with hyundai's transmissions. Thanks!

I can only suggest getting a manual. Driving an automatic is like having the driving cortex of your brain lobotomized. My dads car has a tiptronic and it's just no fun at all. He kicks himself for ever thinking it could be like a manual. If you don't know how make friends with someone who has a manual and learn how.

I dont think the auto will be that slow compared to the manual ones. Perhaps .4 to .5 slower? I dont have the exact times so dont quote me...

An auto won't be much slower as it also depends on the experience of the manual driver. Some people are new, look at me, i can barely start as fast as an auto going at regular speed without making 4000 rpm

Hey but remember i am new. Manuals are way more fun. if you are comfortable with autos, switch and turn some corners, and race some cops just kidding haha

Thanks for the replies guys! If I could drive a manual I would definately get one, but I can't so it looks like the auto is what I would get. .5 sec slower doesn't sound all that bad. I know my auto Stang is a little over a full second slower than the manuals. I also realize that the shiftronic probably isn't going to be as good as a bona fide manual transmission, but I think it would probably be fun for people like me who can't drive manual.
I've also heard that there are both 4 and 5 speed autos for the 2003 tib. Is that true?

the auto tib is about as fast as a 2001 5 speed with an intake. how's that???

but if you add headers, full exhaust and a nice pretty cold air intake, you will be faster then then the 01 tib... which isn't too damned slow.

add some nos on it as well, i wouldn't be worrying about the 6 speeds out there, and you got the convinience of the auto

i think only the 4 speed auto is available for the 2003 tiburon... but the 5 speed auto is on the XG350 and, I think, the new sonata...

Hey RavDav, how fast is a 2001 with an intake? I don't know much about Tiburons. My interest in them just started, so I don't really know a whole lot about them performance wise. If the car ran in the 15's I'd be happy.

dcredskins24, I know what you mean about learning to drive a stick, but I would rather learn and have a lot more experience driving one before I bought a car with a stick. I'd hate to be new to driving stick and then get a brand new 6 speed Tib while I'm still basically new to driving one. I think that could turn out to be a disaster.

Just learn to drive stick. With just a little practice you can learn to get around. From there you'll learn how to really handle it.

I took my friend out and in just a couple time around the lot he was good enough to go any place he wanted.

GIVE IT A SHOT.

Yep, me too. I drove auto for 5 years. I got my new 2001 tib, my friend drove it from the dealer to a parking lot for me. 1 hr later, I headed off on my own

Both Auto and Stick shift have their advantages and disadvantages. The difference is that when it comes to performance you'll be spending money on your auto trans as well as the engine. Imagine being able to plot the upshift and downshift points for the automatic transmission on a graph, and being able to alter those change points. There's an advantage there. The disadvantage is that automatic trans are geared taller, and have 1 less gear to go into. Thats a big disadvantage. The stick shift lets you select gears more positively, and lets you skip gears. Big advantage. It lets you punch a corner that much harder, and increases your chances in an outbrake situation....it's up to you and what your style is, but I have used both automatic and manual transmissions...and both have their good and bad opints.

There's no question that manual transmission is quicker than an automatic (assuming that you have not modified the original transmissions) The V6 models come with either a 5 speed M/T or 6 speed M/T (6 speed will cost you a whole lot more). My recommendation, if u got cash, go for the 6 speed.

yes they usually are...but the the 6 speed is a special transmission so it is , I think, a bit more expensive than the auto. The 5 speed on the other hand should be cheaper.

Just my own opinion here, but from what I have read about other Hyundai owners 5-spds. They arent very good. Some people have had to get 4 or more transmissions in their cars. True warranty covers it but who wants to deal with getting it fixed. I havent seen many problems on here about automatics so they might be better, but again this is just my opinion.
