actually.. whats the rev limit on the 2.0L beta? same?

what would it take for the beta as well.

valves and retainers, rods and cylinder walls?

Actually you could probably get away with a I/H/E, a cam, and fuel tuning (no point in reving that high without what was just mentioned) on a 1.8 beta for some time. Its shorter stroke keeps piston speeds in check. The 2.0 would take a little more work for it to be reliable at all. Stock redline with a beta2 is 6750.

6750 is a decent enough redline for the beta.

everytime I think about doing the slightest thing to my alpha motor.. I wake up the next day and slap myself and say.. beta swap you goof!
