Is your car automatic, 4, or 5 speed, and is the reason you can't go faster than 85 because the engine wont rev any higher, or does the engine at a lower RPM??
Mine's a 5 speed and at 100-105 the engine's at like 5000 rpm. That's just because the car's geared really low.

85 mph? even if it is a 4-speed it would still go faster than that. Sounds like it needs some TLC before you get into performance mods.

With the small amount of mods on my 5spd X2 it tops out just over 120mph.

When I first got my X1 ~10yrs ago its max speed was around 85mph as well. Some new plugs, air filter and tune brought top speed back to ~105mph. Look into that kind of thing first.

My Excel topped out at 120mph a few months back, but now its about 105mph. I wouldn't have a clue about the 85mph that sounds really bad. We're working on a do it yourselft Cold Air Intake. I pulled an airbox off of an old excel at the junk yard and will be working on it by next week. We'll see how it works out. Exhaust headers are available from australia and lowering springs from 3 seperate companies. There isn't much else. Turbo is an option but it costs alot and an engine swap would be more ideal and probably cheaper.
