What does that mean car was and what does it do.... what is timing...... and what is the purpose of advancing or retarding it....im pretty sure the camshaft sprockets are used to this right.

Two types of timing. Mechanical and Ignition

Mechanical sets up when the valves open relative to the position of the pistons/crank. Advancing will open the valves sooner/retard they open later

Ignition is when the spark plug fire relative to the position of the piston.

Normally advancing the mechanical/valves will shift your power band a little towards the top. Generally netting a few extra hp at the cost of a few lbs of torque way down low. Really need to get it on a dyno to see where the most gain is from a cam sprocket.
