hey guys,

I am thinking of getting my wife a 97 or 98 accent. I just wanted to hear from the people that own them what their take is on the car. I know my 2000 is great but i want some reviews from people on the older generation.

I am probably going to go for the spert model but i am also looking at the regular models too. I will go either manual or automatic, doesn't matter which one.

Thanks a lot guys

John, I drive a 1997 Sport model w/ 5 speed, and I recommend the Accent as a decent car.
I bought mine used in 1998 with 46,000 km and it now has 167,000.
As standard equipment, the Sport that I bought had fog lights, a sunroof, CD player, spoiler, tachometer and nice (for 13" at least) wheel covers. No A/C though.
I've had no major problems in that time; I've had to replace the alternator (138,000 km) and I replaced a drive shaft at about 100,000 km because of a bad CV joint.
The only thing that's upsetting me a little about the car is that right now it's getting poor fuel economy, much worse than I've experienced in the past. I recently replaced both oxygen sensors after they failed and triggered the check engine light.
Right now I'm trying to figure out if the fuel economy problem is related to my mainly city driving routine, but it seems to be using more gas than is normal even for my habits.
Aside from that, nothing has happened to my car that has put it out of commission, aside from the alternator, despite my sometimes aggressive driving style.
Hope that helps...
Cheers,
Chris.

yea, if you are gonna get around the 97 model year, try to get the GT (16valve) DOHC 105hp. I think they only made 96-97GT though.

I've got a 97 GT and i love it, it hasn't yet left me stranded. Great little car no complaints and quite a bit of pep when you kick it in the a$$

I have a 97 GT also, but its an auto.
I'm pretty sure they only had GT's in 96 and 97 also and sport for 98 and 99.

There are only a few minor exterior changes from 95-97 and 98-99.

The front fog lights are different, rear bumper is a little different, tail lights are different colours. That's all that I noticed.

Mine came with mostly same things as cdchase, but it came with 14" alloys and no cd player and no a/c. (don't really need it in Vancouver, and it sucks power away anyway)
As for engines, I'm not too sure if the sport has the 1.5L DOHC engine, but the 96 and 97 GT's do.

The car is pretty good, but does lose power due to its auto tranny, but its still peppy. It flares between 1st and 2nd sometimes when the engine isn't warmed up enough though.

I don't really have much of a bases of comparison because I've only really logged time in a few other cars, but it's pretty good in my opinion.

I haven't had any major problems with mine yet. Only did the maintenance and had the ignition coils replaced.

I've driven it since Nov of 97. Pretty solid little car. Its a fun car to drive and once I get some mods to it, it'll be even better. You just have to know how to use the power(or lack of). No use trying to drag other cars or pass on highways without sufficent acceleration.

I've rode in my cousins 2001 GS accent and I have to say it is quieter and it seemed to have more punch(manual). Well... he is a better driver than me considering he has his racing and rally licences. hehe

The two cars have different chasis and different body styling, but I like both of them.
In my opinion, I'd go for the newer models, or younger accents (98 or 99) because they do have some improvements in the fit and finish compared to the 95's and they probably are in better shape.

Going for the "spert" models or GT is something to look into for modding purposes. I'm not sure if there is a difference or if one is easier or not.

Do a few test drives and get a feel for the cars. I'm sure you'll make a good decision.

I owned a 98' Accent, totalled it (wasn't my fault though); Had money to buy waaay more sporty cars, but bought a 96' Accent (non-GT), It never let me down going to work or anything Except for races; just kidding, I wouldn't race my Accent if my life depended on it, well, until my Tib motor is in But yeah, very dependable car, honestly, I like this generation better than the 2000+ But definatley get her the standard! Hyundai Accent's with auto's are horrible from what I'm told from a girl who also owns a limited edition Mazda Miata (maybe that's why it seems horrible)?
