The 5-speed will be faster due to having one more gear, the ability to rev higher, plus better gear ratios.

4doorgl is right...the 5 speed is always faster although BMW has come out with SGM or SMG (I forget the order of the letters) that allows you to have a clutchless stick that supposedly may outpeform a manual w/ clutch. You press something down on the shifter and that is how you shift. Lame...I like old skool clutch w/ stick.

Now, dont drive your car like a manual. Its not a manual! L 2 3 or 1 2 3 whatever your setup maybe is for things like driving up hills, you drop it to hold the gear instead of shifting to climb faster or drop it from D to 3 or 2 when going down hill to use "engine braking" rather then wear out your brake pads going down the hill. Dont rev it like that because you can damage the engine. The car wasn't designed for that in acting like its a manual

Maunals are faster to a point, when you start going up into the high HP arena then their extra gear and better gearing advantage goes away due to human shift time and that turbo/nos/sc isn't still under boost when you shift but now has to build back up. On tibs/Elantras its around 210 hp 200 ft-lbs. untill then you'll need a 30 hp advantage to equal a 5-speed tib or Elantra. That said the auto sucks balls gearing wise either way.

I did the Auto to 5 speed conversion in my car before i turboed it and i noticed a increase all around. In my opinion the 5 speed is better and my car has been both ways.

I got the tranny off of Ebay for 25.00 and the shifter linkage, clutch and brake pedal, hydraulic master cylinder, and shifter was 145.00 and I did all the work on putting it in.

No I didn't change the main harness. I just capped the plugs off and the only thing that isn't hooked up on my tranny is the back up lights.

Maybe it's because you have a Wagon and not a Sedan....

If you look at hyndai factory stats, the 5 speed is an entire second faster 0 - 60 and also in the quater mile. I owned a auto tiburon which I have to agree hyundai autos suck! they are very sluggish. Now I have a 5 speed tiburon and the power is always there. Go with the 5 speed if your gonna race.

My Auto was fine but it went out twice on me so thats the reason why I swapped mine, and I knew I was going FI so that played a big factor in my reason for going to the 5 Speed.
But just doing it for doing it I wouldn't do it, I got off easy cause I caught a good deal and I also saved an a$$ load by doing all the work myself. If you look under Showroom at Misc. Pics of My Car you will see a pic where I was putting the Dash back in after having to take it out to put the Brake Pedal in. That was not a fun thing also you will notice in the pic the steering colum was out of the car too.

So if there is nothing wrong with your Auto i wouldn't change it. Just my opinion.

Matthew said it well, I don't race (at a track) and I've had a few manuals, Hyundai included and the auto can't compare.

Yeah, the auto in the elantras before the redesign in 2001 are not the greatest. If one thing honda does better in, its their automatic transmissions with smooth gear changes. Hyundai autos need some work, although I hear 2k1 elantras have a nice tranny. One thing I would like to see is a short throw shifter in the 5 spds. It feels more sporty then the long throw shifter thats in their now, although the shifter is very precise and shifts nicely

Actually I think Hyundai's automatic trannies shift gears very smoothly. When I worked at the dealership I drove a 2K1 Accent that shifted smoother than the '95 Camry we had there.

Agreed, if you step on the gas, it's gonna shift rough, but so will every other automatic tranny in the world.

Autos stil sap too much power, remember the dynos, stock 5 spd 120 ish hp, stock auto 105 hp, big power loss. The good side is the auto uses torque better so once you get up in the power range with serious mods then you'll be happier. I think a 5spd swap is in order once my warranty is gone tho.
