bent shift fork

transmition problems at 30k miles :/ we found bits of metal in the fluid itself and the fluid was also quite charred,

The problem started when first gear kept popping out whenever i let off the clutch a little bit **From a stop** and now it stays in first gear but when i let off the clutch it makes the classic gear grinding noise, now the problem has escalated to the second gear (Since i had to drive it from a stop from second gear when first gear started having problems), it's also popping out when i let off the clutch and it takes a couple tries before it actually goes in.

I'm thinking it is quite possibly a bent shift for since i dont believe i bit off any dog teeth, anyone have any insight of what else it might be???

And also where can i buy a new shift fork?

i'm almost dead in the water so i need some help if anyone can offer it,

they're making me pay 600 for the tear down, and if they find anything wrong with it they'll fix it, only if it's a manufacturing defect, so i have a 50/50 chance of wasting $600 or actually getting somework done and i'll still have to pay the $600

that makes so sense at all. They just replace the entire unit instead of tearing it down to fixing it.

I can see them charging for a new clutch, thats normal but the rest of your story seems sketchy

no it doesn't make sense because i have a full waranty.... i dont' know why they're doing this

if i were you id take it to a different dealer.

as I said before I know for a fact that they just change the entire tranny rather then fixing it. I work next door to hyundai and always chat with the mechs during breaks, also my ex gf worked there for 2 years. I remember they always replaced the tranny and charged the customer for a new clutch.

check your clips in the engine bay where teh selector cables are. i had a similar problem of the gears just popping out of gear and not going back in.this happened to me in 2nd 4th and 5th.also i think if your selector forks are shot then you may possibly have two bent forks because 1st 3rd and 5th use one and 2nd 4th and reverse use another.im not sure maybe someone on here may know a bit more bout this. does the gear stick feel real loose when trying to shift into 1st.it may be this and will save you 600 bucks jus to check.

they dont tear down automatics, or the 6 speed tib manual trans because the company that actually makes them wants to use it for r&d purposes and doesnt want a mechanic mucking about. not so much if there is no clutch disc material left of course, then you're in the same boat.

the 5 speed is a different story. that one gets torn apart and rebuilt at the shop. the thing i question here is that they are making you front the money for possible warranty repair. what they should do is get you to agree to pay for it if it's not warranty, and then tear down. if anything you'll be out for the removal tear apart and can get it towed somewhere else if you want someone else to repair it.

a tight budget is the number 1 reason to have 2 cars and learn to be a mechanic.

i feel your pain though, it really sucks to have to be dealing with this when you have better things to spend your time with. sorry

remember a warranty protects you from defects and flaws in the build of the car, not from using it. if the shift fork is bent and the pin that holds it to the rod is missing, i'd likely call my dpsm to make sure they'd consider it valid warranty work (dont see why not, but every now and then someone gets a hair up their *beep*). if the fork is bent and the teeth on the gears are all ground to heck, not so much.

well i'm still wondering where i can get my shift fork at? anyone know, or does anyone have an alpha tranny sitting around from a beta swap? that they might be able to tear some parts out from?

Ive been around dealers for sometime now, ive never seen anyone rebuild a tranny. Its to risky, the unit is replaced

um, but i've rebuilt 2 when i worked at the dealer?

you're not kidding, not enough volume to turn over 120 hours a month as a shop.

This should be covered under warranty. Either throw a big fit at that dealer or call around, explain your problem, and go to the dealer who says it's warranty work. People just rolling over like this is why they can get away with denying responsibility.

maybe that dealer denied warranty coverage because they've replaced so much crap under warranty for various customers that they shouldnt have, and then hyundai themselves started denying most of their claims. meaning the dealer lost $$$ and is too scared to do anything but cash work now.
