I just bought a 2002 Elantra and would liek to install an alarm. I don't know jack about alarms and I was hoping someone here could help me out. Should I go with an immobilizer or a passive [sound only] alarm? What brands are good?

I have an ungo myself,... I don't suggest you get that, it's ok, but not the best I could get for what i paid for it. when I got it, I was kinda a dummy when it came to alarms and cars in general,... but damn you learn alot on these forums,...
Anyway I'd suggest you get a compustar, here are the features:
http://www.compustar.org
If I didn't have an alarm, I'd be all over this one.
See if anything local to you carries it, or if you have a buddy or friend who can install it, you'll save like $100 on the install fee usually, but make sure he knows what he's doing,...

By the way, noticed you're a Canuck,... where 'bouts are you from?

Then He's an idiot!
Yeah it has to be in neutral for a 5spd, before you start it.
However, there are ones which have lasers that are installed down in the shifter so, if you have it in gear, the lasers are cutoff so it won't start.
Then there are the crappy ones that just don't care and will start if you're stupid enough to have it in gear, when you turned the car off and remote start it.

compustar is probley the best way to go, one of my girlfriends cousins has this alarm on a 1978 beat up buick, (hillbilly) the alarm is worth more than his entire car. Its kinda ironic, the only thing worth stealing on his car, is the system that protects it.. hmm..

<hr width=60% noshade size=1 align=left>line em up ;)
