I started the car back up, CEL still on, shifter has the same problem etc...

If you had a problem with your car...and it still persists, why would you want to reset the CEL? Obviously, the car has a problem You just don't ignore it. Disconnecting the battery won't do anything either. The computer stores codes from the CEL for the dealership to see. Bring it in and get it fixed. Sounds like a braking system problem to me. Never heard of this happening before, but bring it in. You dont screw around when your brakes don't work
