Grrrr....
Last Friday I put a deposit on a new Elantra GT and I'm getting the runaround from the dealer. None of the dealers around here have them with stick so I have to wait until they get one in. I ended up with a Chianti Red one with sunroof, abs and tcs. Wanted blue, but...no dice. Anyway, I know for sure that its not coming in for another week or so, but they were supposed to find me financing right away and it's been six days, or 4 business days, and I still haven't heard anything. I tried calling a few times and nobody knows anything. All I want to know is if I need a cosignor or not. My father's going out of town for 3 weeks in 4 days and if I don't hear anything by then I'm SCREWED!!!! Has anyone else had problems like this?? And does anyone know how hard it is to get a deposit back from a dealer? If I don't hear anything from them I'm going to have to give up on them and drive my death-trap Tempo for another few weeks. I've even given them some business, I showed my boss the Elantra brochure and he ended up buying a black GT, and my parents bought their 99 wagon from them. What should I do???

Depending on your credit history and how much you are willing to give them as a down payment, you may be able to get away with not having a co-signer.

Also depends on your age a bit.

the insurance company said that I have a high credit score, but the dealer said that I might need one because this is my first time buying a car. I don't see why I would need one, I'm 21 and make enough money, but if my rate would be like 13% without one there's no way I'd have it only in my name!!

Zach,
Sounds like your reeeeeally anxious to get your new car....I feel you
totally...I was chomping when I got my GLS 6 weeks ago. You may need a co-signer, depending on your credit, your income and length of emloyment...or not. It helps if you have bought a car on credit before of course. In any case, the GT is worth waiting a bit for, you might go down to the dealer and ask them if there is anything you can do to help speed things up...like provide a co-signer...which may not even be an issue. The dealership may not be pushing the financing paperwork because the car has not even been delivered yet...they might figure "whats the rush"? Go down to the dealership in person, talk to the sales manager, tell him whats happened so far and whats on your mind. Good Luck!

Zach hope I can help with this...

the need for a co-signer is normal. If you never had bought a car or have never had a loan you need one. Its probally because of the amount of money involved. When you own/mortgage a HOUSE or something like that, you will see that people start giving you money. Y? Cause you don't pay, they get the house, kinda like a mafia or something. Now I do not think you can hold another car as coladrol (sorry I can't spell but is the thing the house is sound it out).

Yes you know you are gonna pay etc right? Well you still are a credit risk. If you have a family, are 25 and starting to settle down etc then you will see that banks are more nicer to you. I am 21, and I too am getting screwed like that. I am hoping that my Tiburon V6 will be approved.

As for 16%. See if they can find you a lower rate. There are some factors there but I may not be sure of why its that high.

All I can say is good luck. I was in the dealership checking my status on my Tiburon and there were literally 3 different groups of young guys (not to mention my friend whose 20) that is looking at the Elantra GT. With the new 2.0L Beta, looks like these guys know something that I haven't heard on the board. Other then its one damn nice engine.

If red is not your colour wait. I know I can't wait for my damn Tiburon, but remember its your car for the next couple of years, get what you want so you won't regred it.

Okay, first time car buyer? Holy **** watch out. They are gonna treat you like a dumbass. If you have good credit and make lots of money, if they try and give you a 16% plus interest rate, you should still have your deposit in your hand, get it back right now, and don't give it to them until you have a deal that is satisfactory to YOU!

And don't go by payments. Look up the MSRP, and the dealer invoce, and tell them you want a nice pretty cut. And demand to know the interest rates, and if they give you ANY RUN AROUND at all, walk the hell out and go to another dealer. If they sell it at their invoice cost and give you 7% financing, they are sitll making thousnads on backend, and financing options, waarranty work, and their doc preperation fee. Don't buy their addon's like window etching, tell then you don't want it, and if they say it is already on it, tell them to replace the windows or get a car that doesn't have it. Hyundai puts the VIN on every single door, 30 places in the engine, on the windsows doesnt mean **** nor will lower your insurance.

i would recomend a cosigner for your first car purchase. it will give you a lower interest rate, and make sure they have you as paying it. This will help build your credit. If your parents are willing, make them, and have your dad come with the whole thing and have him read this!

It is prudent he is there, as unfortunetely, they will respect you more. If he is a big 6' and a half guy, 300 lbs, the even better. practice with him a scotish accent and tell him to say if they don't give hi mthe deal, he'll eat em

lol. go get your deposit back right now. if they refuse to, i sure as hell hope it wasn't cash. you ill hire an attourney, contact the bbb, and state attourney, and simply raise hell.

when you are getting the financing done, don't buy any extra wrranty scotchguard (if you want scotch guard, I will buy the $10 can, and do it for you for $15... how's that??) the stuff they do, they make a 800% mark up on the bullshit.

watch every line, and bring a calculator so you can figure out the purchase pruic,e plus tax, minus your down payment, devided with interest over the loan. If it is off $10, tell them to fix it, as this is what they do sometimes to add an extra $10 a month. That's $600 over 5 years, if you work it a couple of times, and they say, it must be your fualt, tell them, NO it's their fault and they need to fix it or you will leave because they are not being honest with you. Trying to take advantage of a young person.

if you need any help at all, email me at [email protected] and i'll be glad to help. i have sold hyundais, and all dealerships have their ways to make their money

and if they have a adendum sticker, telll them to burn it right now, because the only number you are working from, is dealer invoice up.

Sounds like ravdav knows what in the hell he is talking about, might want to listen. Also do you have a bank you do regular business with? If so you could talk to them, they might help. It usually helps to have a checking &or savings account also, don't know how old you are but if you are really young you are pretty well screwed on your own. You will probibly have to have a co-signer. Good luck, hope it works out ok.

One more tip on top of everyone elses...
NEVER EVER EVER EVER SETTLE! If you want red, the damnit find red! Can't find it? Look harder! If you search to the ends of the earth, then get blue. Trust me. My best friend bought a truck. Std Cab. He's kickin' his own ass right now cuz he really wanted and NEEDED ext. cab. But hey, it was on the lot, in his color w/ the options he wanted. Always find what YOU want. And walk in the door to the dealership like you own the place. Say, "I'm going to buy a car today! Who wants to help me?" Five men and women will jump you. Make them WORK to get you in the car. Good luck!
