Click here to view a spread sheet containing my compiled list of Hyundai transmission failures.

http://www.geocities.com/cottonmouth_hco/HyundaiTransmissionProblems.htm

If you have a problem that you have not added to my list in this post:
http://www.hyundaiperformance.com/forums/snitz/topic.asp?a=&t=4696
Please do so so I can add you to this spread sheet.

I have left the owners out to keep things anonymous.

The only thing with some of the problems are they could be linked with driver abuse, the line between the two is sort of blurred without actually talking to the people and getting the verbal story. I did have a failure of the cone synchros on second gear and it was replaced under warranty, that is a true legimate hyundai problem. Some people had also mention to me that they had had suffered failures of the pinion pin. Was it a legitimate failure or did they do too many one tire fryers and gall the pin causing the failure.

In my line of work in structures and dynamics, when a complaint comes to a dealer, if it is a legitimate complaint, the issue will come to the technical center where we will investigate the problem to find the source, how it happened, why it happened and how to fix it.

It is too easy for a automotive manufacture to to hide to problem. When our company has a failure of a truck engine on a over the road truck, the problem spreads quickly throughout the ranks of truckers. Because of that fact the problems gets attention quickly. Often a rebuild will cost the trucking company $12,000 or more and the lost income for the use of the truck, thats why truckers scream loud about problems. For the automotive consumer they have a hard time joining together to know what problems are common, out of the fact that there are just too many owners of vehicles. The average consumer doesn't have the leverage power to do anything about problems. It takes a larger organization with legal power to stand up about legitimate problems, like the many silent recalls that mitsubishi has had and now in trouble with. In some cases it takes a act of god to get a manufacture to owe up to a problem that could pose a loss of millions in recall.

Case "15a" has an error. Closest dealer was 300 miles away and Hyundai wouldn't pay for towing until the cause of the synchro failure was determined. Because of this, the rebuild was done by a local shop out of my pocket. Receipt for repair was sent to Hyundai, but they refused to reimburse because a Hyundai dealer hadn't looked at the synchros to determine if failure was caused by abuse. Thanks.
