Conversation with Hyundai Dealer..RE: mods

I went in to Lithia Hyundai today (Fresno Ca.) to talk to Larry Kirby the Service& Parts Director. I asked
him about mods and warrantys. He said that any voiding of the warranty was not up the Lithia, but
Hyundai, but that the District Rep
was flexible, and would go to bat for
a customer from time to time. Generally, He and the District Rep
are of like mind... any modification
has to directly related to any mechanical problem to cause a void, and would only
void out the applicable portion of the warranty. He gave this example:
If I installed a CD player, either myself personally or some else and the work looked adequate I would not be held accountable for a electrical problem that might occur. If the work looked slip-shod and the installation was done incorrectly,
I could lose whatever portion of my warranty that was directly related to the problem I created....period.
He said they look to see if there is
any clear connection between a mod and any equipment failure. He basically said to use good judgement
regarding a mod, not to install any-thing that has potential for creating problems, but even then it will be considered against the applicable part of the warranty...not the whole thing. I told him I had Bananas install the JVC, Sound Unlimited do the Alarm system and Kalifornia Customs install the Fog Lights. He said I could have done it myself if I'd wanted, and that the District Rep
knew that most people what to add things to their cars. My Neighbor with a Civic told me that the Honda Dealership would not allow him to install his own Stereo or Alarm! It was a good conversation, I feel like I know more about where the Dealership and
District Rep are coming from. I also told him I would be posting excerpts
of our conversation on H.P. Forums.

Was that because of that VW owner who is getting sued by his dealer? That was such a crock. Glad you have a cool dealer

Yeah Coupe 2k, ya never know. I posted this mainly because I think it's worthwhile sharing our experiences with dealers and Reps.
Secondly, I wanted him to know that I was documenting the conversation
in a sense, in case time passed and what was discussed became "hazy".

That VW owner won the case.
That dealership will loose alot of business.

I LOVE my dealer. Not only have I brought them alot of business, and helped them sell some cars, but they have been 110% cool with everything that I have done to my car. The Nitrous, the air ride, the custom body mods, the interior, and the other engine mods I have done. I've met the district manager of NY state, and I have his card. I was instructed that if I EVER need anything, then I'm supposed to call him and he'll hook me up. But the service managers and the dealer's general manager always hooksme up with free stuff and help anyway. I only wished all Hyundai dealers were like this one.

Hey Maxx, you're from Fresno?? That's cool! Me too. I didn't think there were any other Fresnans on here. What's your car look like in case I see ya around?

Good to hear that Lithia will be relatively cool about mods, since I have my share. I haven't had trouble with them so far. They actually enjoy it when I bring it in just becasue stuff has been done to it. Infact, I'm going in today to get the passenger door lock fixed.
