Ok, one of my friends just got a B16A (SIR2) motor swapped into his 94 Civic EX. So I'm like, ok, cool.

So what does he do next? He buys a fuel rail (yes, on his stock motor and fuel system) and an AEM intake (ok by me on this one).

Later that week, we're at my place looking at magazines, and we get into a huge debate about block guards. He swears up and down that he needs a block guard in his engine, I'm like wtf? Then he tries to tell me that his cooling system won't be affected by it. Nevermind all the water paths in the block are now replaced by a chunk of metal with little holes for the water to flow through.

So he asks me "If you don't need a block guard, then why do they make them?" My reply: "For ricers like you" .

Anybody else have any confused friends like this? They do one thing good for performance, then totally negate it by their ricer antics.

The closest I came to rice was a pair of "powered by Hyundai" pads. I had them on for about a week then thought, "what the **** am I doing". I'm sooo ashamed.

Will you guys forgive me?

I know a guy who swears automatics are faster drag racers than sticks... becuase you don't have to "take the time" to shift.

Its not that they are faster but it's easier to run more consitant times in an auto vs a stick. Or at least that is what I've been told.

Matt:

There are a lot of hyundais when SR/HP.com have meets. I was at the Thanksgiving one in MD. I drove a good 2 hours down, and about 6 hours back [Thanks Jin and Dave ] but yeah, nice turnout, if you look at the pics he has posted and that whole post on the pics... you'll see. We also like to have fun as well... so its not dull either. Come to Carlisle... It'll be real nice...

Auto's are the shiet for bracket racing. You'll hit the same time almost every run!

OKie here's how it goes...automatic transmissions in Hyundais come with 4 forward settings. A manual transmiccion has 5 forward gears.Say the autobox is a H-Matic...i 2 drivers shift at redline, the manual transmission still has the 5th gear as a bailout, and the auto stops at 4...take into consideration automatic lag in the gearbox, overheating of the ATF under duress and the preset shifting rpms of the autobox, not to mention the automatic's added weight, and guess what...if the driver in the manual car knows how to change his gears properly...you're smoked cuz he can go right to the redline while you're still waiting for the autobox to take up the drive!

well, if your in a turbo car an auto actually is better for drag racing, since your in gear, you can power brake the **** out of your car, spool your turbo, and have a launch already in boost. there are 2stage systems like this for 5spds, but i think they work better in autos. look at most of the hardcore turbo drag racing cars, their mostly autos.

your 5spd will most likely top out higher, but the 4spd's do have different gear ratios, and unless your racing to 130, i dont think that having a "5th gear bailout" is going to help all that much

i drive a 5spd because i like em better

ive never driven an automatic that was faster than its stick counter part... and I thought (i could be way off) that most racers that run autos do so becuase they swap an engine and its easier to do so with an auto, no need to worry about the shift cables and such. All i know for sure is i hate automatics.. very boreing to drive.

I dont do a lot of drag, thats why i find the automatic to be a major disadvantage...in drag you basically flash the converter like you said and bingo, ready to rock launch!Another advantage the auto has in drag racing is that the F/Rpump/converter has already built up enough pressure and can mantain it,not to mention it saves time not having to go to the stick, clutch and then shift,so drive is constant!and it takes so much less time in a sport where wins are considered by fractions of a second. In short, automatics are better for drag racing(my mom's Sonata 01' is an auto, and i managed to edge out an SLK Mercedes Kompressor by flashing the converter at the lights, and not even use the H-Gates!)you already know how heavy the Sonata is...so this was proof of the auto's time-saving abilities in drag! Why i prefer manual transmissions...because simply you can play tricks on other ppl with the gears on the track, especially when you're off the pace and coming into the first of several hairpin turns...and needing to take the line advantage back ASAP against more powerful and lighter cars...!
