I own a 1999 and a 2000 Tibby. I've been driving the 1999 again the last week and I've noticed they drive different.

I've got my theories on what's different and why, but would like some opinions from the board before I post mine

I drove a 97 and a 2000, and I can tell that the 97 gearbox was a big mess. Impossible to get that thing in 2nd gear fast. And that was after 4 trips to the dealer to get that sorted out....

Will have to agree with you on this one,... my 99 has a "clunky" feel to it,... where my bud's 2001, is silky smooth! I'm so jealous of that
But the 1st gens look better! IMHO

2000+'s have a slightly different engine assembly than the 1999-'s.

From the dyno tests I've seen, the gen 2's seem to dyno higher than the gen1's.

The gen2 also has a slighly revised gearbox to ease shifting.

Leave it to Random to Needlessly complicate things.

I also noticed, the 1st gen tiburon have a first cat and the exhaust manifold connected by the two ends bolting together, but the 2nd gen have them welded.

Seems to concur with what I've seen. I've driven the 1999 about 15,000 miles and the 2000 about 7,000.

The shifting is quicker on the 2000... it has a shorter throw. The 1999 seems easier to shift (as far as pressure required to move it from gear to gear).

The 2000 definitely has more power (glad the dynos seem to match that, thanks Random). I think part of it is due to the 2000 having a cold air inlet (it pulls at least some of the air outside the car) while the 1999 air intake is stuck under the hood without a flow of air from the outside. That could make a horsepower or two's difference. Wonder if they also tweaked the engine a bit as well?

The 1999 also has a "looser" steering wheel. Did they change the ratio on the steering? It seems to take more movement to get the same amount of turn out of the 1999 vs the shorter turn of the 2000.

Overall I'm torn. I like the cobalt blue 1999 with the shark wing... it just screams FAST. Though the red 2000 (red is my fav color) with the aggressive front and the nice interior is good too! I think the red one is faster and that seems to concur with road tests I've read (8.4s 0-60 for the 1999 vs 8.1s for the 2000).

Though the new V6 is so tempting...... auggh... decisions!

Thanks guys
