I have a '02 Elantra and my brother just got
an'02 Elantra GT.
I would just like to know how diff. they really are. I was told that they do not have the same frame, is that true?

One is a hatchback (GT) and the other is a sedan. Suspension in GT is tightened up for a sportier ride. Engine is the same in both- a 16 valve DOHC inline-4 140 hp. GT has 4 wheel disc brakes, leather interior, foglights and indiglo interior.

I doubt it, The gt frame looks shorter than the sedan frame.

I know it's just a technicality, but niether car has a frame, they're unibodies. But, yes, they are the same platforms. Sorry, that's the geek in me shining through.

Both cars are winners in my book, the GT must be the buy of the century given its features to price ratio, I am happy with mine.

I agree with Red GT...both of these cars are the Lick! My friend Bradley
has the GT and I have the GLS, and they are very similar to drive. The handling is a little sportier in the GT but the ride isn't quite as smooth as the GLS...suspension difference etc. Are cars are hella
similar since I added the Fog lights, JVC CD player, Leather seat
pads and leather-wrap on the steering wheel. Didn't really care about cruise control...purple?indigo
instuments are kinda cool...don't have those

I wish I could get a 5 door GLS. The suspension and wheels are being recycled as soon as I buy the car, I don't like leather, and I prefer reverse indiglo gauges to the indiglo gauges. I do like the bodystyle, though.

Bad news even though the the GT looks fast the stock elantra is about 400lbs less so posts faster 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. But style is everything

Yeah, I did read somewhere that the GT was a little heavier because of
extra glass weight or something else....but the article wasn't specific.

What are you talking about? The GT does not weigh 400lbs more than a GLS. Where are you getting your info?
Well, car and driver, motor trend, road and track, and more... it's in the specs. since the 5-door style requires more glass and body panels, they weigh a little more...

I like my GLS myself. I thik the GT looks too much like the SAAB. But I do like the Austrailian verson of the GLS. It's got the same side moulding around the car like the GT but without the hatch.

According to the Nov, 2001 issue Road & Track, the 5spd GT weighs 2635, 140 lbs more than the GLS, "likely owing to its greater amount of glass."

Also: "...bright minds at Hyundai's California headquarters persuaded the company to keep the European suspension intact, retaining its gas-filled shock absorbers and springs that are some 10% stiffer than those of the current Elantra sedan. ...the GT wears the larger diameter European-market anti-roll bars - 24mm (versus 23) in front, and 14mm (versus 12) in back."

I'll take the extra weight (it's in the back for better balancing anyway) as long as I get the better suspension. Besides, IMNSHO there's no such thing as looking "too much like a SAAB"!

Yes the GT has a little extra glass but it also doesn't have the rear shelf behind the seats that our GLS's have. They also have less metal on the trunk than the GLS. Glass does weigh more than steel but I doubt it is that much of a difference between the GLS & GT. I sincerely doubt the real difference in weight is over 70-80lbs. OF course we will never know the EXACT weight difference unless 2 people weigh there cars
