Fender Flare questions...

What is the easiest way to create a fender flare... looks are ok, but I'm looking more for funtionality... any suggestions?... my initial thought was for a "cut and paste" basically, but I may be constructing a full fiberglass body for the tib so... that may make it a little easier...

Thanx in advance.

I thought fender flares were just for looks, I'm in the process of making my own kit as well, could someone explain to me what the functionability of them would be. I thought if anything, it would make areodynamics worse...

Theres no "easy way" to create flares because its not a DIY job. You can buy universal flares and have someone to mold them on, or have a custom body shop create them for you. Flares have no functionality, they are purely cosmetic just like rear spoilers, to actually gauge the aerodynamics you would have to measure resistance in a tunnel... I dont think you would actually feel any significant difference in that small change in body shape.

They are only functional if you need increased downforece and you know exactly how to make and test them or, you are putting on some Ghetto Fabulous ultra wide wire Daytons!!

I dont know about you, but i dont think any of us can attain enough speed to create substantial downforce with fender flares. I DO remember seeing a ferrari on Discovery that had a spoiler that enough downforce to keep the car on the road if it was flipped at 150 mph.

my interest in them was not for aerodynamic reasons, or for looks... the functionality I was referring to was for the fitment if bigger rims/tires in the front to match the rear, and give it more of a "tucked" look.

so it was for looks...

let me clarify... the "looks" part of it was only for tucking... I actually am aiming for the that extra room under there to alleviate problems from having bigger rims... (along with a few other adjustments) Does that make a little more sense? When I'm typing it all makes sense, but it takes a while sometimes...

well..i dunno about fender flares, cus some are rather flashy, but if u "roll ur fenders" u do so for mainly functioality so that u can get some big rims under there, get them wide enough, drop it, and not have it rub all over the place. plus it'd help u not sling mud and sh!t all over ur car if uve gotten wider wheels.

and, wings have no importance on fwd cars (well at least not unless they're goin mach point 3) but no importance what so ever? most stock wings on rwd cars are usable. look at the big ass wing supras come with.. yea those big ass 2 foot handles they have are stock...

No more rinky-dink mods, getting a job, saving till summer = Beta! or should i just buy headers/tib TB/clutch/tranny? and other misc. shiz for the same price?? the tib engine is a nice base for the future..

If you can find a skilled body shop (a hot-rod shop would be a good bet) you may be able to get the stock fenders pulled out to clear the rims and tires. This is something often done on production based race-cars to get enough clearance for the bigger race slicks and lowered suspension. Cutting the return lip away and removing the inner fender shields will also give you a bit more clearance.

If looks are truly no concern, you could cut the wheelwell opening back to clear your rims and tires, and use some of this from JCWhitney.

Let me clarify a bit...

By "pulled out", I mean pulling the wheel opening outwards, stretching the whole fender outwards to clear the wheels and tires. For an example, take a look at the Redshoes Racing archive from 1996 and look at the rear wheel wells on the BMW 3-series. The rear wheel wells were pulled out to clear the wheels, as the BTCC rules didn't allow for fender flares. The wheel openings are also cut back to eliminate the return lip that would otherwise catch on the tires.

I jhvae noticed that on the Korean sites a lot of the vehicles at motorsports events do not have wings!? Myabe they are trying to take off some weight? I fyou get a carbon fibre hood,(real carbon fibre hood=real expensive), and the plastic or fibre glass replacment fenders ( I think they have them on shark racing), Would it save a lot of lbs? I mean, replacing sheet metal with fibre glass and carbon fibre would save a lot of lbs, ...wouldn't it ??<img src=/images/forums/snitz/oogle.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>
