Dear Every1.

I've got a bit of a prob. Basically I find that's hard to change into and out of 1st and 2nd gear. It's just seems not to slip in smoothly, it has to be forced in.
Is there any fuild or something, or, is serious like needing a new gearbox.

Please help. As it's rather an important problem, and I'm not sure if I'm making it worse, with continual use.

You probably have a syncro that's been stripped or nearly stripped. Take it to your local dealership and have them look at it.

A syncro is the part of your tranny that pre-engages your gears when shifting. For a more complete explanation, it explains them at http://www.howstuffworks.com.

I know that in researching the Accent before i bought it that the manual transmissions are somewhat primitive, my 2001 sometimes won't slide into 1st gear, it needs a little extra push, and when my sister or a friend drives, they sometimes can't find third without grinding something<img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>, I just figure its the design of the unit. But 4doorGL is very right in saying take it to the shop. One thing fixed now is better than two thing needing to be fixed later.

This problem plagues hyundais, my new LC has 123 miles on it and i already feel the 1st to 2nd synchro's starting to act up.
This highly disapointed me, even though the shifter feels more direct, its still a hyundai. Now all im waiting for is that lovely valve tick to come back, hopefully i'll have the beta before then.

Thanx Very much for your response. However is it an expensive job to get it fixed, or should I just leave it?

Cheers AD

maybe your clutch is worn out. when was the last time you had it replaced? i'm not sure, but driving with a badly worn clutch might damage/score the flywheel (requiring it to be resurfaced or replaced). good luck.

I think i know what the problem is. Put yourself in this situation, you work at a dealer, your only job moving cars around. Now would you, A:Drive slowly and carefully, respecting the break in period, or B:Beat the living piss out a car you'll never own?
Those 10 miles your car comes with from the dealer are probably the worst 10 miles in your cars life. I'm gonna go find that kid, and im gonna kill him, then im gonna get it fixed, gotta love that warrenty.

A message to the honda camp, we're coming.

Hey man. I have a 94 Scoupe with the 5-speed. When I got the trans was grinding the same way you are talking about. I drove the car for 2 years with it grinding. I finally got it rebuilt and there was no other problems exept for the syncos. However, about 6 monthes later the problem came back. Since nothing broke the first time I will wait a while before I get it rebuilt again.

OK, I worked at a dealer. If we EVER drove the cars hard, we would be fired. NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

the problem is the shitty transmission. Hyundai can make engines, but the trannies still suck. My clutch and syncros don't like to work right on ocassion either. I'm gonna bring this up at my dealer on Tuesday.

yea, i just got my car a few months ago. Its got like 64k on the clock right now (2k of it mine). and ive noticed that sometimes when i shift it goes and makes a TINY grind noise like the moving gears it each other wrong for a fraction of a second... but thats just cus its getting old i guess. The biggest thing ive noticed is that when i go to put it in reverse..sometimes i have tolet the clutch up a tiny bit for it to drop in. Other times, ill push the clutch in the WHOLE way, and when i push the shifter back it ginds and the gears stop spinning..its like they'res till spinning slowly, and then once i slide the shifter it grinds them stopped... I think thats cus the clutch is getting worn tho..cus its like its disengaged..but not enough that the gears stop completely. After i gind it once, they;ve stopped tho and i can slide the shifter around freely. I think i just might need to adjust the clutch pedal and how much it moves the clutch when i hit the floor with it.

Hey, I had the same problem. The guy at the race shop told me to replace the current oil in my tranny with 5W30 or 10W30. And he told me to not use syntetic oil in it. It's not working good cause the gears need a little bit of friction to work properly. It seems that lots of car are having that problem with original tranny oil! He also told me that if it still not working, I would have to use automatic tranny oil. Oil transmission on a eagle tallon or mitsubishi eclipse had to be changed to automatic oil transmission at the time they were comming out form factory on certain year model.

BTW, I never heared the 2nd gear krunching again!
