Hey doc

My fiance wants to do something nice and give away one of her kidneys.

What are the risks involved in living with just one kidney?
Is there anything that she should be thinking about before going and getting this done?

Just want some advice about the sideeffects, both physical and mental.

your body wont filter fluids as well.

That's a very thoughtful thing to do. There are many complicating factors that can happen, resulting in death. Need I say more. If it's for a close freind or family member, the benefits can outway the risks. Sounds like you have a very giving fiance, there are many other things that she can do to help people that won't put her own health at risk.

its just because we have a shortage here in aus. she just feels like doing something nice.

Give blood when she is able. She will be able to help many more people that way and continue to do it for years or as long as she can. You can do this too . She can also volunteer at various charitable organizations that help people when they are displaced due to fire, storm, etc...ex. american red cross, salvation army, etc...

give a couple of Pints of blood now and then, save the kidney for when she might NEED it.
