My friend at work has a old red 86 GTI, No power steering, no nothin just a all motor car. I asked him if I could take his car for a little spin last night, so he throws me the keys just like that. I was like, hah, damn, you trust me that much? So he said, well I know you can drive so go head. So I was like aight, got into the car started it up.... Stalled... Hmm.... I found out the hard way that you just TOUCH the clutch to start the car, it was like you almost didn't need the clutch at all!!! So I was like, How do you put this thing in reverse!? I had to look closly at the shift knob... and guess what it read

...uh.. oh... This is going to take some getting used to man!!!! LMAO Hyundai's are like this

Simple? ya know? So I finally get used to his clutch and the gears, it took about 10 minutes or so and, I loved the car cuz no powersteering brought back mustang moments. So I find a straight away, and off I go, that thing is amazing!! I didnt even have to use the clutch going from 1st-4th gear!!! The car needed a tune up, but jesus, it was fast!!! Its also completely stock. Motor sounded good and loud no raddles. I was very impressed by the age of the car and how many miles it had on it to run as good and as quick as it did. Pretty impressed with VW folks. Them GTI's are one mean customer!

Old friend had an '87 GTI 16v, ran a 16.3 with just an intake, not bad at all for a 1.8L 135hp car like that.. plus those things handle like nobody's buisness<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0>

too bad today's GTI's (and all VW's in general) have about 1/10th of the soul that the oldschool ones did =(

i'd love a mk1 GTI just to toss around. cars very far ahead of their time as far as handling goes imo.

btw, VW's still use the same shifter layout. hehe. except you push the shifter down (physically down, you scrunch it down) and then move your hand to the left and up to get it into reverse. kinda wild the first couple times you drive it =)
